Do people do this for a 6 month/yearly trip?

Question

Do people sometimes just catch a plane to a country with a big city with no pre planned arrangements.
They just go there, try and find some work and live, just for the experience of it. Is it possible to do this for up to a year?
and is it a good idea to do just for some life experience?

Lex, you hit on one of my passions in life. The life experience you will gain from wander-lust is 2nd to none and even better when you take someone along to enjoy the pleasures.

Obviously to take off at a whims notice is expensive but if you have the funds then nothing isn't within reach. First make a list of the places you would want to see. Study their everyday living and then go for it. Obviously you want to blend in with the locals so language is a must. Local restaurants and bars are a great place for networking.

To answer your question... it is a great feeling to just get away because it only takes a flight to get back home. BUT always do some research on where your going. Its only prudent.

You could look at the sites for Voluntary Service Overseas.
My daughter did this when she was 18 before College, and had a wonderful year. OK, she wasn't paid a great deal, just some pocket money, but she had her clothes, food and a roof over her head.
She said it gave her time to grow up before she was out on her own.

It's difficult. Many countries require visas.
