British born chinese - eat out late?

Question

my new girlfriend says because shes BBC (British Born Chinese), they eat out late with family sometimes, like a tradition.

She's going out with her family apparently, at 11:30pm tonight. Is that normal?

(I don't know about her culture or traditions and rather than accuse her of anything, i thought it'd be best to ask here)

She is telling you a whopper. Sounds like she has a late date she doesn't want you to know about. Her family is all asleep at that hour. Sorry.

huh? really , I have not heard before , I know chinese and british do not eat at such late hours , it is like supper already . I think your girlfriend does not want to go out with you at late hours is the correct explanation because her parents will usually get angry or worried with their daughter , then the daughter will get massive amount of scolding

It's not exactly normal but not that unusual either. It may just be a family tradition, my family has an odd tradition of staying in a restaurant and drinking coffee after a meal for up to 2 hours. It infuriates me but it's just how they do things.

Chinese people don't eat that late. Neither do British people.
In my experience, Chinese people born overseas don't eat that late either.
So I really don't see where the logic is.

You don't have to accuse her of anything, just maybe subtly ask if you can come along.

yup, quite common, especially if her family was originally from Hong Kong or Taiwan. I know many Hong Kong people and Taiwanese go out for "late night snack". It's not really dinner or supper, but rather, just tons of little dishes, usually eaten with congee (rice porridge), or hot pot.

Actually in some countries it is common to have the last meal of the day at that time. In China, no, but I would not be surprised if someone with a British cultural background did eat that late...

Maybe if their family is in the catering business it might be the only time that they can get together. Restaurants, take-aways etc stay open late and many open during the day too.

i'd say that's kinda strange...
coz usual British dinner never starts earlier than 12 PM...
so she must be wasting somewhere those 30 minutes...
maybe shopping

and in addition to that...
there is no such term as British Born Chinese...
