No signs for speed camera, might there still be one?

My brother was driving me along the M8 from Edinburgh to Glasgow yesterday, when there was a section with a 40mph limit (because of roadworks), but there were no markings for speed cameras. We didn't spot any, or any police vans or cars, but I noticed he briefly went at about 45 for a couple of seconds before he realised and slowed down again. Is there a chance he might still have been caught?

Yes, there is always the possibility there is a camera or copper with a laser gun.
There is no requirement to sign.

If he was at an indicated 45 then the chances are the actual speed was only about 42-43 and is unlikely to be done for that.

At least one local authority is installing new cameras without warning signs, the idea being that you should be aware you could be caught speeding anywhere - as you could by a real policeman. Existing signs aren't being removed. They are going after the continental model where in some countries not only are there no signs but the cameras are painted an inconspicuous grey too.

Temporary limits within roadworks are often policed by average speed cameras, which don't flash and don't need road markings; you may spot them by seeing a double-barrelled or triple-barrelled thing, one or two barrels being infra-red illuminators and the other a camera. They snap every vehicle entering the zone and again on leaving, and work out the average speed - if it's excessive the first you know about it is when that lovely envelope drops onto your doormat.

"No signs for speed camera, might there still be one?"
Yes. The requirement for speed cameras to be signed was dropped about 3 years ago.

"...but there were no markings for speed cameras"
With the latest cameras, there doesn't need to be any road markings.

"Is there a chance he might still have been caught?"
Yes, there is. But, there is also a chance that he hasn't. Anyway, you'll find out within a couple of weeks.

if he went till 45, he would not be caught even if they had cameras he should not have been caught. if there was a police officer and he would have gotten caught, the police man would just say slow down. my dads a police man and thats what he does. its not like he was going 50. it was just 5 over the speed limmit.

no they have to stop you to get a ticket,,unless they take a picture in your area and then send you the ticket,,but that would probably go to the car owner as they do not know who was driving the vehicle
