If you're talking about the Underground its £8; if you're travelling after 09-30am weekdays, anytime weekends and returning the same day, a Zone1-6
One Day Travelcard will be cheaper
If you're talking about the Heathrow Express train which runs from Paddington Station, not Victoria, the single fare is £18 or £16-50 online. Return £30 on line or £32 at the station

By Underground you can only get single fares. You travel to Hammersmith then change to the Piccadilly line to Heathrow. Adult cash fare is £4 single at any time, with an Oyster card it's £3.80 between 0630-0930 and between 1600-1900 on Monday-Friday, and £2.20 at all other times. Journey time about 47 minutes.

If you really want to use surface trains, then you'll need to use either the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect services from Paddington station, and the Underground from Victoria to Paddington will still cost you £4 cash single or £1.60 Oyster single at any time; Heathrow Express costs £30 return (valid 1 month) or £16.50 single ("Express class", or £50 return/£26 single first class, which seems excessive for a 19 minute journey).

Heathrow Connect, which calls at various stations on the way to Heathrow, costs £7.90 single, £15.80 return from Paddington. Journey time about 26 minutes.

EDIT: Timbo: The Trainline will NOT give any information on all-Underground journeys, it just gives the most expensive cash fare to Paddington and then the extortionate Heathrow Express price!

Get an all-zones London Transport Travelcard or an Oyster Card and you catch the Victoria Line (Northbound) to Green Park (one stop) and change to the Piccadilly Line (Westbound) which will take you all the way to whatever terminal you like. It takes time but is a hell of a lot cheaper than the Heathrow Express which only exists, like the Gatwick Express, to rip-off American Tourists.
If you've got a New Deal card, you'll find it's amazingly cheap.
