How can i get to Italy without flying?

Question

Me and my boyfriend would like to go on a short break somewhere this Christmas, only problem is i can NOT go on a plane, no way! I'm looking for ways to get to places in Europe, Italy mainly where we wont have to fly and wont cost the earth.

Assuming you're starting from the UK, you can take the train. From Paris, there are night trains that run to Florence & Rome or Venice that are good options. If you buy tickets early enough, you can get a berth in a 6 bed compartment for as little as 35 euro for the Paris to Italy trip, but Christmas will be a popular time and the discounted tickets may not be available. There are other discounted levels. You'll need to check your specific travel dates to see what's available. The travel times will be long in each direction cutrting down the time you have here in Italy, but it still should be a nice break.

You could go to Europe by Eurostar and then connect with a long-distance train all the way south to Italy. But it's a long way, and even though European trains are fast, you may think the journey takes too long for a "short break".

You don't say where you are, so it's pretty hard to answer that question for you.

If you are in Europe, sure. Rent a car and drive or take a bus or train.

Transatlantic crossing from New York will take 5 days to Europe, and then you still have to get to Italy and then back home again, not really suitable for a "short break".

If you live in North America, I would suggest visiting Quebec City for a European feel, centuries old buildings and a foreign language.
