I presume because of wars, and prior to approx 1960 very few females smoked but then it became fashionable with television programs and adverts, when I started smoking in 1971 we were not told of the danger or diseases or addiction it caused and it was cool to be a teenage smoker. In most films the main actor always smoked to look suave and sophisticated. Apart from smoking there was a lot people had developed asbestosis due to working with asbestos and again they didn't know of the damaged until it was too late and caused lung cancer and obviously until around the 1970 the medical equipment wasn't available to diagnose cancer.

The obvious one is the increase in smoking - soldiers in both wars were given tobacco as part of their rations. Smoking was seen as being cool through this period - particularly with the rise of Hollywood movies which usually featured heroic / beatiful people smoking. Also the way cigarettes were advertised during this period was appalling - totally ignoring the known health issues, often promoting cigarettes as being good for the throat.

Air quality was pretty dismal for most of the 20th century due to industrial and vehicle pollution and it was not until the clean air laws of the latter half of the century kicked in that pollution levels started to reduce.

The means of detecting lung cancer also improved, add to this the increase in population and you have more people to get cancer and easier ways to detect it, hence the figures increase.

First of all, there were no warnings against the danger of smoking because they didn't know about the warnings until much later in the 60 and 70 when they started warning people about the possibility of nicotine being linked to lung cancer and other cancers well. More people started smoking. At first, very few women in 1910 smoked. Those that did, only smoke to look sophisticated with their long cigarette holders. It made them fit in with parties and social events. My mother told me that women did not smoke at home on a regular basis with kids. They only smoked at parties and such. My mom hated them. she tried them once and couldn't stand it. So as awareness became known started in the 60 with more information in the 70 about it. People decided to stop. It was difficult for me to quit, but I did it. So I gave you your reasons. Would you prefer a list?
1910-smoking was considered sociable and it was acceptable,
in 1970, people started to become aware of the dangers, yet most were ignored.
1910, Not many women smoked unless at a social event therefore, lung cancer was not a prominent as it is today. because so many less women smoked
1910 the tobacco was purer than today Today they use a lot of harmful chemicals that cause the cigarette to be more dangerous. In the 70, more adds on TV about low tar cigarettes etc. When in fact, the more chemicals they used, the more harmful the cigarette.
Since the 1970 when the dangers of smoking became more and more heard about, people started to sit up and take notice. Many began to quit. It workd for the most bart.

Cancer statistics were not kept in 1910 and diagnosing anything at that time was not easy and often wrong therefore, any numbers found would not be correct.
People did not live long enough to get lung cancer in 1910.

It's obviously because cigarettes became popular and they didn't know that smoking was bad until somewhere in the 1950's. That's why.
