Can running out of gas damage a gas water heater? After running out how can u get the water to heat again?

We are on pay as you gas with scottishpower. We ran out of gas yesterday and then immediately got a top up. Now the water heater will not heat the water even after we have got more gas. Also, our landlord told us that running out of gas probably damaged the boiler itself..any advice?

It will not have damaged the boiler but if there is a pilot flame this will have gone out. he probably wants you to pay for a new one!

There is usually a flame failure mechanism so you do not get gas poisoning when the gas comes on. You usually have to press and hold a button while lighting the pilot. You have to hold it until the flame sensor glows red hot. When you release it the pilot should stay on. If it goes out wait a minute or so for the gas to clear and start again.
