Germany - which region ? Your opinions please?

Hi there,

Next year I am going to be staying in Germany as part of my University degree. I would like to know your opinions on which region you think would be the most beneficial to me? (I'll be looking to obviously improve my German and I'll be a primary school assistant) And which region I would be most welcomed in and have the most fun?

I am swaying towards either Rheinland-Pfalz or Bayern. However, I would like some personal input from people who know Germany and have had similar experiences,

I have been to both Rheinland Pfalz and Bayern and I really liked both.
Tough choice, but I d go for Bayern since it has better economy and is more interesting from the point of visiting due to much greater diversity.

Forget the other answer, Hanover people claim to speak Hochdeutsch or standard German but can't pronounce the German ''st'' correctly.
People from Hamburg and the coast do not speak Hochdeutsch at all, also their idiom is not a dialect but a different language called ''Plattdeutsch''.
In Bayern they speak dialect but they won't speak dialect with you since you are a foreigner. Everybody speaks standard German there it is the language of TV Radio and at schools.

If you want to learn German Hannover or better Celle is the best --- but Hamburg is acceptable. Avoid the other parts of Germany --- they do speak a very hard dialect even hard to understand for other Germans.

@Dickless Bob: Due to a research of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs the best German is spoken in Celle.
The only Germans who spoke "sp" and "st" correct were we Hamburgers. When they learned democracy in 1968 I believe they decided we are wrong and now they write "sp" and pronouce "schp" and "st" and pronounce "scht". I guess, your last visit to Hamburg was 50 years ago. Today we nearly speak as the guys in Hannover, but our "a" tends to be a little "ao".
Your statement in southern Germany they speak better standart TGerman is a joke, yeah? As the swabians say "Wir können alles - nur nicht Hochdeutsch"

Nice answer Dickless.
Bayern is nice and try and stay as close to the Alps as possible. Lots to see, lots to do and yes, Germans will not speak in dialect when speaking to you. Bavarians also have a really nice accent.

Rheinland Pfalz!! You could go the the Kaiserslautern University. A good school. I didn't attend, but I have been in the RP for overe 20 years. Demil from Detroit.

I would suggest Rostock, Germany. It is a beautiful town on the Baltic Sea, with everything from beach fun to night live. Rostock's university has a good reputation as well, with lots of degrees available.

Rostock is close to other major cities, such as Kiel, Hamburg, and Berlin (2 to 3 hours travel time). So, while you're in Rostock, you would easily be able to see other parts of Germany as well. Denmark is only a 2 hour ferry ride away as well.

Other than Rostock, I can recommend Cologne. I spent one year in Cologne and loved it as well.

sorry rio-blanco I can't follow you. I beg your pardon. but which Hamburger is speaking German ? the one of Mc Do or the one of Burger King. Awsome I did not knew that burgers teach you German. it must be a simple language though

My advise: go to Eisinack. People are very friendly and they speak German very slowly if they meet an American. I am there regularly. I am therefor getting a Bratwurst and a kleine Fickling and met a lot of friendly people there. they even startet a binchdrinking contest with me. They are also bald guys. They are nice. Hang out with them. You will have a lot of fun with them.

Stay away from East Germany it is dangerous there if you are not German.
People like ''Visit Rostock'' are really irresponsible to tell foreigners to go there.
