Off to Egypt for a two week Holiday.......?

one week on a cruise around the Red Sea and then a week In Sharm El Sheik on the beach in a hotel.....

The cruise has pre-organised outings to the sights but they are expensive - is there any other options?

Any hints or tips from fellow Egypt holidayers....

Thanks

If there's a trip to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings then take it, whatever the cost. Most of ancient Egypt is around Luxor.

i am assuming then you are taking something like the thomson red sea magic cruise. the trouble with this cruise is although you sail to the closest point to the city's in question it is still a further 2 hour coach ride to cairo or about 3 hours to luxor. you have short time there before you have a similar ride back again. You ask if there is an alternative. well you could probably get off the boat and arrange a similar trip in a taxi for your selves which would probably be cheaper. But you still have the long trip and you will be travelling in a local taxi not the most comfortable ride for such a long distance or the most reliable. remaining in the local port is likely to be limiting as well. To be honest i would suggest you think about spending your money on the trip to petra and staying on the ship for the rest of the time enjoying the local markets and do go snorkeling in sharm or diving. Then next holiday take a nile cruise and stay in luxor or cairo as well for a while. you will then get to see all the amazing sites and they are amazing, With out the serious discomfort of long journeys. and you will spend all the time you want seeing what you want and not rushing on one of these tourist buses which also bore you rigid by taking you to papyrus museums (tourist papyrus shops) perfume factories (egyptian perfume shops where you can buy overpriced scents that smell nothing like the famous names they insist they are) and of course the ubiquitous alabaster factories where half a dozen men sit around outside pretending to sculpt alabaster..... they never actually make anything there. Watch them and see. however if you want to see a little of ancient egypt your choice is as follows. Cairo to see the pyramids and the museum you will get about an hour in each place. I have spent full days in the museum and seen only half of it. I can also spend all day round the pyramids but i am crazy about the subject.
Luxor you will see the valley of the kings and 3 tombs. probably Hatsheput's temple, about an hours visit and maybe karnak temple. these are the high lights of luxor but there is so very much more to see. hope that helps
