While certainly not the same by any stretch of the imagination, the Italians and the Spanish are often considered culturally quite close, in terms of language, food, architecture, social attitudes and general urban ambiance.
In the same sense, could Sweden and England be considered broadly similar countries and cultures in the same sense Spain and Italy are similar? I have only visited Sweden once, and that was a short trip to Stockholm, which while the capital city is not necessarily representative of the whole country, I found Stockholm was quite similar to many British cities in terms of ambiance and architecture.
Like Britain, in Sweden the use of red brick in construction seems to be rather popular, while in Southern Europe, the use of red brick is almost entirely unheard of. Also, similar to Britain, many Swedish cities have a similar taste in "modernist" architecture, and it is often built in a rather similar style to what is found in many British cities.
Also, Swedish and English people seem to have broad similarities in their behaviour in the way that Spanish and Italians have similarities in their character and behaviour.
So, do you feel England and Sweden could be considered similar in the same sense that Italy and Spain are often considered to be similar, or would you say there is a greater cultural gulf between Sweden and England?
Thanks
