Where to stay in new york?

Im taking my girlfriend to NY just before xmas 2010 for 3/4 nights and was wondering wheres best to stay - im completely clueless! this is a surprise (gonna to pop the question). iv tried trip advisor but thats just confusing!

location is #1 short walking distance to... central park, times square, huge xmas tree, ice rink, shopping, places to eat (inc cheap quick-bite places) and a subway station thing.

#2 is quality of the room, needs to impress when she walks in. space isnt an issue but decor is, simple is ok but cheap looking is bad, outdated it ok but dirty and old looking is bad, bath and a shower would be a bonus

#3 dining at the hotel would be nice - doesnt have to be 5 star but has to be a good menu and tasty (backup for breakfast/lunch and maybe evening meal)

hoping for somewhere that's £250ish a night, of course the cheaper the better (gf will be mad if i spend too much since were trying to save) could spend a little more if needed to get what im looking for.

i know it sounds like im being fussy and going way out just to pop the question but when i spoke to her family they told me it was her dream to get engaged in new york at christmas time so i gotta make the dream come true!

any helpful advice would be really appreciated! like little places to take her or show her aswell as which hotels.

cheers!

The Hilton New York is on 6th Ave. (Avenue of the Americas) pretty much in the heart of Manhattan. Its a good hotel. It might not be in your price range but come on, it's New York. Its hard to find something nice like your talking about that is cheap. Pretty much everything in New York is over priced haha
and that is so sweet about the whole engagement thing!! That's great!
    Good luck!
You will have so much fun in New York!

the plaza would be AMAZING and sometimes i think it might be better to spend more and stay only a few nights rather than spend less but stay longer
