Tam Brazilian Airlines is the cheapest Brazilian international Airline.
If you will travel by plane inside Brazil you should choose Trip or Azul Airlines (the cheapest ones).
You can travel to Argentina and Chile by Tam too, but I don't know any airline from these countries.
My suggestion to you would be a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and,or Santiago. You could maybe stop in Manaus, which is in Amazon.
Rio is a tropical city, with a lot of touristic attractions, like Sugar Loaf, Christ the Remendeer, beaches, museums and ecotourism points, including the biggest urban forest of the world. Yes, Rio has some problems with safety, but the only two things you need to know are: don't go into slums and don't walk alone. If u do that, you will be safe and have nothing to worry about.
Buenos Aires is a more cultural choice(etc.., and I don't know a lot about it)
Santiago is a city in the heights, so if you go in the south hemisphere's winter, u can ski and do other snow activities, but you'll go in the summer so I don't know what you can do there.
Manaus is in Amazon, so it became an important cultural and ecotourism point. Many hotels are near the forest and offer safe guided tours through Amazon river and the forest(kids love seeing the exotic animals).
Anyway, have a good trip, I am sure South America is the right option.
