What's some original inexpensive literary character costume ideas?

Question

I need to dress up as a literary character for school. Something cheap, unique, and easy to put together.
I was thinking the Raven from Edgar Allen Poe but my friends have tried to talk me out of dressing like a bird although I thought it was a good idea...
Ideas anyone??

I really like the raven idea, I think that would be cool. If you want something relatively easy, dress in a long dress or skirt and long sleeves that cover your arms, a bonnet and a big red felt "A" on your chest- unmistakably Hester Prynne, and you'll impress your teacher. Have fun!

someone from my school once painted a big cardboard box brown, cut out some doors on it, put on some doorknobs and went as the wardrobe from lion the witch and the wardrobe...

What about the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland? That's just quirky clothes, a teapot, and a top hat with a sign on it.
