I'm a student social worker, and it wasn't the pay that attracted me to do the degree but the difference I could make to a person's life, hopefully many peoples'. I think that the general consensus in social work is that people do not do it for the pay, rather the experience and the feeling it causes when we do something that causes a person to be able to have a better quality of life.
However, I do feel that qualified social workers think we students disillusioned and very enthusiastic as their own enthusiasm faded away some time ago when they realised that most of the time would be spent doing paperwork rather than in face to face contact with a service user.
