What is a lorry tachograph?

I just searched it on Google but can't find anything, I need a description on how it works and what it is. Thank You xx

Hello,

If you drive a commercial bus, coach, lorry or van, you need an approved tachograph to monitor activities covered by EU drivers' hours rules.
There are two kinds of tachograph or 'vehicle unit' (VU) - analogue and digital. The digital tachograph stores electronic data on you and your vehicle in its own memory and also on your smart card. It replaces the analogue tachograph for vehicles registered on or after 1 May 2006.

a tachograph is just a device that records the speed a vehicle is doing at a given time
The older ones look like a speedometer and you flip open the front and put a graph disc into it. The newer ones use a credit card type device instead.

it's a time and motion machine which records driving time on goods vehicles ( they are only allowed to drive for so many hours before they have to take a break or about 12 hours rest, in uk.
