Are japanese racist to black people?

Im 14 and i'm going to Japan in April with my family but i have heard that they are xenophobic and point and stare at black people. Does anyone who has been to japan have any experience with this. Also does anyone know any nice hotels to stay at that are not directly in tokyo city but has Access to trains into Tokyo. Thank you.

unfortunately, yes we are. by their appearnces, by their words and deeds, we see them as animals. black celebrities that are recongized as hip and cool and something like that in the us dont come off in those terms in japan. black pop cultures are laughed at by most people including the youth. take hip hop, only those young and retarded listen to and imitate it, just like only those with a blunt sensitivity copy how those black gangstas wear clothes. and they are laughed at by other young people. it is quite natural that those fools are looked at with other people's pitty eyes becausse they are kind of people who can buy these CDs without flashing their faces in front of a store clerk:http://images.google.ca/images?hl=en&um=…

and i dont like that kanye west gorilla guy who stole a microphone from beautiful ms.taylor swift. some black people are pretty unfortunate because other black people are just like that

I'll have to be honest here. I am Japanese-American and I've been to Japan many times. Anybody who is different is stared at, black people especially because they are so rare. I've seen it and it's unusual to my eyes. Very often it's from curiosity, not because they're threatened or xenophobic. However, there are some Japanese people who do see influx of other races as a negative. Here we'd call them racists but it's not unusual in a society which has been mostly homogeneous for centuries and mistrustful of foreign presence ever since the war. I don't think this is the prevailing attitude among the youth, however, as they see themselves as part of a global culture rather than just Japanese.

For hotels outside of Tokyo, I like the Yokohama region the best. It's accessible to Tokyo by train which is easy if you get the Japan Rail Pass. There's are also hotels in the Kawasaki area which are quite good but it's more a residential area than business. The kind of hotel that's best for you depends on the type: youth hostel, traditional style (ryokan) or business hotel.

I don't think it's how Americans see Mexicans at all. I'm American, but I'm black. I hate when people say Americans are this, Americans are that. But in reality, there are lots of different types of Americans not only white Americans.

In Japan, I saw a Japanese actor in black face which was disturbing. Then I saw these little troll dolls in a store with really exaggerated black features. I had a few people make some comments to me, but nothing more than in other places I've been to.

But Japan was the most amazing place I have ever visited. I wish I could go back because I had such a great time there.

As far as hotels, I would stay at the Holiday Inn or one of the other hotels with direct shuttle service to the airport. That's what I did and it was really easy to catch the train from Narita to get to Tokyo. Good luck!

we love black people(especially who are from america, europe)
there are some japanese people admiring black people because of their musics and fashion, personalities.
and black guys are popular with japanese women.they are just hot!

we just hate those chinese or south east asian(like filipino, vietnamese) who came to japan and commit crimes or practice prostitutions.
at least, black people don't do those vulgar things in japan.
there are no reason to be racist to black people.

Yes they are a bit racist to blacks, but they are not rude. They may stare esp in rural areas where they would be very uncommon. Unfortunately most of what they see of Black people are from rap videos. I remember Public Enemy being popular when I was there and if that is all you see it doen't help much.

As for hotels, you can get to anywhere in Japan by train. Shinjuku station is the main hub for all trains..

They may stare because you're different, not because you're black. They might stare at Mexicans too. Some Japanese are racist, some aren't.Some might not like white people either. If you're just going for a visit, you don't have anything to worry about.

Never been to Japan but my university are full of Japanese students and none of them treat me or any one else differently. Sounds like a stereotypical rumour to be honest.

I think they point and stare because they've never actually seen a real black person before. Only on TV.
