Whats the Best Hotel on the Vegas Strip for Location?

I'm travelling to Los Angeles next year and driving onto Las Vegas, what would be a good hotel for location and for quality of hotel. Near other casino's etc. I'm not to fussed about it being 5star hotel, just want a fun good hotel.

Also any suggestions on things to see / visit between LA and Vegas would be welcomed.

Thanks

Depends on your activities that you plan.

Typical things to do in Vegas are clubbing, shows, gambling and sight seeing. For a location with all of these activities, I recommend The Venetian where everything is in walking distance. You have Tao and XS at the Venetian and Wynn. Great shows all around the area. And overall it is centered on the Strip so it doesn't matter which way you go... North and South have plenty to do.

I also recommend checking prices on rooms 6-9 months in advance. Book a decent deal and keep shopping. Most places have a cancellation policy that is quite liberal. This way you aren't letting a good deal pass you up! The room prices can change from morning to night! The closer the date, the more expensive it will be!

I would have to say Bellagio for location and overall accommodations. If you can get a room facing the Bellagio water show, that would be awesome.

If you want to stay at the best hotel overall in Vegas, then Wynn/Encore would be your pick. They have no rivals and the Encore is amazing. It is a little north of Bellagio(which is in the center of the Strip) but you get what you pay for.

Center of the strip is the place to be - there's a lot going on and you can pretty easily get to anywhere else on the strip that you want to be.

There are a few high-end places in the center - Bellagio and Venetian/Palazzo; both are really nice, but tend to be fairly expensive. Caesars isn't as pricey as either of those places, but is still really nice and is also central.

Flamingo, Mirage, and Harrah's are also central and tend to be less expensive. Again, all nice places.

You could also try Bally's, which is older but fine, and tends to be pretty cheap. And Imperial Palace is also in the middle, but is pretty old and dingy; dirt cheap though, if all you want is a place to sleep.

It depends on your budget and what you're looking for in a hotel. I love Caesars, and Mirage is also great. Bellagio is a little uppity, but beautiful; same for Venetian/Palazzo, although not quite as snotty in my experience. Harrah's is also a lot of fun. I would try to choose among those if it were me.

Your question is actually a trick question, though you didn't mean it to be. The reason is that the Strip is several miles long and filled to capacity with mamoth casinos and hotels. The real question I believe you are asking is where to stay with the best access to all the action on the strip. The answer to that is, without exception, MGM.
The reason for that is that MGM is on the southern central strip and if you were flying in rather than driving it would be quick in and out from the airport.
I know you are driving, so the biggest reason to use MGM is Location at the major monorail hub and access to the Deuce Bus. The Monorail travels the entire length from MGM to Sahara and soon will be from the airport to Fremont St. (At least that is the rumor).
There are multiple pedestrian walks from East Strip to West Strip, so it is a decent walk from the 7 monorail hubs to any point center strip.
Things to do in Vegas is Shows and Eat. If you see only one show see Jersey Boys at Palazzo, your sweetie will absolutely love it. Any of the Cirque Du Soliel Shows are great, too. That would be KA, "O", Love, Mystere, or the adult Zumanity. If you are not particular about your seating or the particular show you wish to see you can buy tickets same day from Tix4tonight or any other 1/2 price ticket vendor located on the strip, one of course next to MGM.
Below is a link to an interactive map of the vegas monorail system. The cost of the Monorail unlimited access is about $28 for 3 day pass. Deuce Bus is $7 per day unlimited acess
I forgot to tell you, if you want an adult oriented show make sure it is NOT Crazy Horse Paris at the MGM. Don't waste your time or money on that dog.

All casinos on the strip are near other casinos so that should be no problem. Most of them are very nice, acceptable places to stay. A few are not.

Consider these mid level places depending on your budget: NYNY, Monte Carlo, MGM, Planet Hollywood, Paris, Bally's, Flamingo.

All the above are in fine locations and walkable to each other and more.

The drive from LA to Vegas is desert and has little to nothing of interest, just get thyself to the Strip and let the fun begin!

Look at the Vegas strip on the map & pick one in the middle. If you're not worried about how nice of a hotel it is, I would do that. MGM Grand is a great hotel, so is Ceasar's Palace but they're not in the middle. The Flamingo is a cheaper hotel if you don't mind walking around to other hotels.
Not sure if you're male or female - but ladies, I would suggest seeing "thunder from down under", and everyone should go to Cirque du Soleil if you can afford it! Have fun.

the mgm grand definitely! we stayed there last year and the place was stunning! i even took photos of the toilets because they were so grand! its even got its own lion habitat!
make sure you get a room in the grand tower though DONT go to the west wing (tiny rooms no windows!)
its a great location you can reach all the major attractions. just visiting the hotels is fantastic in itself. don't miss the fountains outside bellagio, also the shops in ceasers palace,go up the stratosphere tower, i dare you to go on the rides at the top! if you can afford it you must take a helicopter to the grand canyon, also a night time helicopter trip over the strip is a must. take a limo to have photographs at the "welcome to las vegas" sign (not as expensive as you would
think) god im getting excited just reliving it all!!! you will have an absolute ball! if you are going to take in one of the "eat as much as you can" buffets then go to the excalibur its great! and not one of the most expensive either.
if you're gambling the odds are much better at "downtown" vegas
wherever you are gambling you will be given drinks by the cocktail waitresses, give them a dollar every time and they come free all night....give them two dollars and you'll get them more frequently!
whatever you do remember you need to tip practically everywhere! so make sure you budget for it.
have a fantastic time!!! (wish i were coming!) xxx

There are three major corners on the Strip, which is four miles long. Depending on the deals, they are all great places to stay since you don't spend that much time in the room and you can enjoy any casino even if you don't stay there or club. * indicates current great deals

CORNER - Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur*, NYNY, Monte Carlo*, Tropicana*, MGM Grand

Mandalay Bay - Shark Reef, Zero Temp Bar
Excalibur - Tournament of Kings Dinner Show, and the castle
    NYNY - Manhattan Rollercoaster
MGM Grand - free small lion habitat
Luxor - it is the pyramid

CORNER - Caesars Palace, Bellagio, Paris, Ballys, Bills, Flamingo*

Caesars Palace - Forum Shops with 2 freew anatronic shows and a circular escalator
Paris - Eiffel Tower ride and restaurant
    Bellagio - fountains in front

CORNER - Wynn, Encore, Venetian*, Palazzo, Treasure Island, MIrage

Mirage - Sigfried Roys Secret Garden and the volcano in front
Venetian - gondola rides and Grand Canal Shops free entertainment
Treasure Island - Sirens show in front

There are other casinos but this way if you see you have a great deal to see at one corner. Too many clubs to describe and other shows. However, see one of the six cirque shows like Mystere or Love (Beattles tribute), OR LeReve OR Phantom of the Opera OR Jersey BOys

I think Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand or Mirage are very nice. These hotels also have reasonable prices if you book the room with a promotion code. Keep an eye on http://www.vegas-hotels-online.com - it has the latest hotel promotion codes available.

Imperial Palace, Flamingo, Bill's Gamblin Hall and Bally's are all in a great location, not expensive, and right in the middle of the Strip.

Imperial Palace is the most often cited budget casino in center strip. If you want an upgrade next door get a GO! room at the Flamingo. You are within easy walking distance of some very nice casinos.
