Hotels in New York & New England travel?

Question

We will be travelling to New York in October and really want to stay somewhere nice, central and not massively pricey. Does anyone have any recommendations? All suggestions would be really appreciated. Also restaurants, top places to see etc. We are then travelling on to Boston and New England so the same for those - any advice, tips, suggestions? We'd be so so grateful for any help. Thanks!
