How can I get from San Jose to Liberia in Costa Rica?

Hello. I am trying to get a flight to Liberia in Costa Rica but it's proving a bit tricky and expensive! Someone told me I can go to San Jose and do a 4 hour bus ride to Liberia? Has anyone done it? Can anyone recommend the best (and cheapest!) way for me to get from San Jose to Liberia? Thanks

Hi everyone, thanks for your answers so far. Just two more questions! Is that 2000 colones for the entire bus journey to Liberia? Also, roughly how long is the journey? Thanks guys

Flights directly to Liberia have become very expensive recently and flight schedules have decreased due to Sept/Oct being slow tourist months. You can fly to San Jose and either take the bus (public or private) or fly a regional airline like Sansa or Nature Air. These are about the only options until fares decrease to Liberia. A private bus service will be more expensive but you are guaranteed a more comfortable seat, air conditioning and a bathroom. Good luck.

Take a taxi from the airport to the bus terminal in San Jose. Or if you want to save money take the bus to San Jose and a taxi from there to the bus terminal. As far as I remember the ticket costs less than 2000 Colones.

Just tell the taxi driver you want to go to the bus terminal where the buses to Liberia depart, they know where it is.

The cheapest way is by bus = 2400 colones = $4

Also the best private service is Interbus, they can take you from one hotel to another and also they can take you straight to the airport.

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely give you the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

    Hi!

Everyone is correct, the public bus is by far the cheapest. However, if you don't speak Spanish or if you have limited time - this won't be your best option. I took the public bus once (at those prices, had to try!). Luckily, my friend spoke Spanish, because none of the bus drivers or the guy that sold us the tickets did not. And it took ALL day. If you can get an express bus, that isn't bad, but we had missed the last express for the day. We also had to change buses at the half way point - which again would have been horribly confusing had my friend not been able to guide me.

Now when I go, I usually take a private shuttle. NOT the cheapest way, generally about $130 for the places we went - but once you divide it up between your party (if you are going with a bunch of people), its well worth it. They pick you up at the airport when your flight comes in, and they take you directly to your hotel. Its so much nicer. Its faster (fast being relative, after all this is Costa Rica and its very mountainous) its more comfortable and its really worth it if you are traveling with a group.

The shuttles service I use is called Costa Rican Shuttle (or something like that) and you can book right on-line.
