Will this stop me entering Australia?

Ok here's my situation.... :(

My mum was born in New Zealand and me and my brother have NZ passports as well as British ones.

With a NZ passport, you are free to enter and live and work in Australia indefinitely, the only thing you can't do is claim dole.

My brother did this and has been living in Sydney for 8 years.

I want to follow him next year as i think it would be a better life, however, 5 years ago i got in some trouble which i'm worried may affect them not letting me in.

Basically, i met a bad girl and i ended up with no where to live ( in winter). I rented a hotel room ( nothing fancy) and told them i was locked out for a few days ( i said i lived in the other street) as i needed a bed for the night. I stayed 5 nights and left....in the end i went back but they had already told the police ( i had given them my passport when i checked in ) and i had to go to court and pay back the money for the room, which i did.

They said it was silly and called it obtaining services by deception.

That was 5 years ago. I now have my new NZ passport, but i'm worried now - is what i did going to stop me being allowed to go and live there?

Thanks for your help :)

It probably will not have any effect on you entering Australia. You may at some point need to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain and they will pull up your record. Even so, it doesn't sound like the biggest criminal offense ever, so you may be okay.

The question is, where you charged and convicted of anything? Or was it just small claims court? In other words, do you even have a record you need to worry about?

However, I wouldn't worry YET about ENTERING Australia. There's plenty of time once you enter to check with local folks about these things.
