DOCKING IS NOW ILLEGAL IN THE UK AS OF APRIL 2007!! Unless you are able to prove that they are to be used for working i.e. with all the relevant certificates.
Even then it MUST be carried out by a vet who is a member of the RCVS. By doing it yourself you are breaking the law and will face a heavy fine and prison sentence.
And after these pups have been found new homes SPAY YOUR DOG AND DON'T BREED ANYMORE. If you are attempting things like this at home you clearly have absolutely no place in breeding your dogs!!!

You don't. You need to get a vet to do it as there can be many complications. Most vets in the UK won't do it now as it's considered cruel.

You don't, a vet does. Please don't do it. It's not needed.

In the UK it is now illegal to dock puppies tails and unless a health reason exists you will probably not find a vet to do it.

All dogs in the UK are now meant to have the tails they were born with and this is why you see dogs that had stumps (including dogs like Jack Russel's) with full length tails.

It is also extremely cruel and unkind to do this type of thing in a untrained manner.

I have a type of working dog in which the tail has a top segment that is customarily removed at one of two days old in a process called tail topping ...usually done at the same time a vet shaves off the dew claws under the smallest whiff of anaesthethic. This is process done to stop a specific type of injury in the working field and is just the tinest tip at the top. It is expensive to do with a litter and the vets that will carry out this simple procedure are few and far between such is the overall dislike of tail docking generally.

If ou go ahead and dock your rotties tails you will have real issues in finding homes for them as at some stage in the future of these puppies lives someone will say something about who why and when and you you find yourself in deep trouble.

Have a word with other Rottie breeders - but it is illegal to dock tails in the UK now, unless you have a working breed (and work them). Personally as this really doesn't hurt a puppy if it's done correctly, by somebody who is qualified, and at the right age (within days of birth), having seen what Rotties/Doberman/Boxers with full tails look like, I think it's a real shame. I just hope breeders can standardise the tails of these breeds because right now, they look dreadful!

you feel for the part of the tail that feels as if it is split. then you push some of the skin up and do it. by pushing the skin up you are allowing it to come back around over the end of the tail. Put them back in straight away with the mother and she will look after them and keep it clean

You don't, a vet does, and you have to do that when the puppy is between 3 and 5 days old or else they can feel it and that's cruel.

You have to take them to the vet to have them do it properly.

I bred Rotti's a few years ago and had their tails docked. If you go from its *** and then find the 1st knuckle down its tail thats were you cut. You do need to push the skin towards the cut so it heals better. Once its cut put it straight back to the mother who will clean it. This can only be done with in 48 hours of them being born.

Also you can get a dogs tail docked in the republic of ireland by a vet as it is not illegal there yet, but I know if you are bringing them over to the mainland you need proof the tails were done legally.

    I hope this helps.

Rotties are docked at the first joint. However your question shows you are posting from the UK. It is now illegal to dock in the UK unless you can certify the dogs will be used for police, military or rescue work (the other 2 exemptions for pest control and hunting wouldn't apply to Rotties) Docking when allowed must also now legally be done by a vet in the UK
