If you were going travelling for three or six months, where would you go and why?

I'm 37 and thinking about taking some sort of sabbatical or career break, getting out there and seeing the world.

I'm fresh out of a long-term relationship and am at a loose end. I am happy enough with my life, but I can't shake the idea that it's only because I don't know any different and that I'm missing out on something so much better (but I don't know what). I need to get that out of my system in order to decide what I want to do next with my life.

I want to spend say three or six months seeing what's out there. Maybe it would lead to a new start, like getting a proper visa for one country and finding a job and so on, or maybe it would make me realise that I was being silly and that I'm happiest back at home after all ("home" is London, by the way). Either way I think it would be a positive experience for me.

I'll be going on my own and I don't drive so it will be public transport all the way. Language-wise I have a little French and German. I have enough money for cheap hotels and so on.

I have no idea where to go. The US? Australia? Somewhere else that I haven't even thought of? I've travelled a little bit before, but mainly 3-4 day trips to places in Europe (and usually on business). So I'm collecting ideas! I want to know about all of you and your experiences and your dreams and plans. Where have you been, what was it like, where would you go in the future if you could?

Australia is beautiful, but I'm not sure if I'd recommend it for 3-6 months.

I'd love to go to South America - absolutely amazing!! The countries are just so gorgeous, different and there are endless things to see and do.

If you're strapped for cash, I'd recommend south-east Asia (think Malaysia, India, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam) for some cheap but unique experiences, with rich cultures and complex histories. This is the perfect place to find yourself as a person.

If you can only afford cheap holidays, I don't recommend Germany, Sweden and that part of Europe - very expensive.

Happy travelling!

Thanks for all the answers. I still don't know what to do, but I suppose there's no hurry to decide. Vietnam etc does sound good.
Start in Mexico and go down following the countries in Central America and South America. It will be possible to travel many countries. For help travel to Brazil see more details at www.seeyouinbrazil.com. It would be an amazing experience.

I would do a trip where you go to many places for a week or two each, sorta moving round.
If it were me I'd prob go to US first, maybe New York, then down to Miami, then across to LA.
Then I'd fly down to New Zealand and do the Kiwi Experience bus thing (check it out online), Milford Sound in New Zealand is a definite as well as Queenstown.
I'd prob then go across to Australia for a while and do the great barrier reef.
If your looking for the possibility of a fresh start then it could be a good idea to visit a few places and see which area you prefer, Many of my friends have been to New Zealand and absolutely loved it.

I've got two walls of my office covered in places that I've always wanted to see, but never did. I had to return to the UK from Canada to see two places that I never went to when I lived there.

First off I'd suggest that you visit any where in the UK that you haven't seen. I lived near the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland for years and never visited it until I went back home on a holiday. BTW go to Wales and go up mount Snowdon.

Next I'd look a little further afield look for things that you have always wanted to see or places that you have heard about and seem exotic.

Good luck and safe home. I wish I was going with you, please do go on your trip don't end up like me wishing that I'd gone to some of these places during my gap year.

    Hermitage
    Angel Falls
    Victoria Falls
    Taj Mahal
    Table Mountain
    Ayer's rock
    Great Rift vally
    Machu Picchu
    Ankor Wat
    Xian Terra Cotta Warriors
    Great Wall
    Forbidden Palace
    Grand Canyon (just a suggestion)

    Been there done that
High Arctic (north of 80 degrees)
    Yellowknife
    Niagara Falls
    Giant's Causway
    Belfast
