What is a good first car?

Question

I want something that is cheap, low insurance, doesn't drink petrol like crazy. What can you recommend?

Nothing French or Itlalian
Corsa, Ka, Micra, Fiesta,

Ford fiesta, Peugeot 106 / 206, VW Polo, Citroen Saxo

All of the above are popular first car choices and come with a range of smaller sized engines good for insurance and petrol.

I had a ford focus for my fisrt car and loved it, but this was a 1.6 so wasn't cheap on insurance for a first car, although you can get smaller engines.

I would go with one of the fords personally.
