Advice on a tropical Island, not too touristy where I can work?

I'm currently travelling and settled in Australia for a bit. My visa runs out in Jan 2010 and Im not ready to go home and figure while im on this side of the world Id like to see as much as possible.

During my travels I spent a month in the Cook Islands and loved it so much, just island life, a small place not too touristy with so much going for it! I would definately go back, but the problem is visas only allow you 30 days. Id like to actually settle on an island (preferably in the south pacific) or a few months, maybe even get a job in a local shop/bar whatever and live 'island life'.

Does anyone know if this is possible?? Do most small islands only allow a min time period where you cannot work? Ive considered Fiji as you can stay for four months which would be great, but havent heard amazing things tbh, and it sounds like a job isnt possible-though if you have any other info on that please share!! Would just like some advice/ideas, all welcome! Thanks!
