East coast of Australia - short tour?

Question

Hubby and I are travelling to Australia in February to attend a wedding south of Sydney. After the wedding we intend to travel up to Newcastle to visit relatives for a day and then have about 4 days to explore before we return to Sydney for our flight to Bangkok (for Phuket). We haven't been to this area before and would be grateful for any ideas as to where to go. We are hiring a car and stay overnight in B&Bs along the way. We are staying at Sydney Airport hotel before we fly to Thailand so we have built that contingency into the trip.

Any advice would be gratefully received (we have been to Australia before)

We have been to the Blue Mountains but have talked about going again cos it was sooo beautiful.

As you intend visiting the Newcastle area , how about spending some time sampling the hospitality at the Hunter Valley Wineries...then it's just a short trip back to Sydney ...

I'd definitely recommend the Illawarra region - it's a beautiful rural area by the sea surrounded by mountains and enclosed in rainforest and dairy farms. Personally, I'd go down to the Gerringong/Kiama region - there's plenty of stuff to do there, the beaches are great (particuarly 7 mile beach [actually 11 miles]), and the attractions are plentiful. Drive up to the Saddleback Mountain lookout (really lovely), go to the blowhole in Kiama (the largest blowhole in the world), and also perhaps go to Jamberoo fun park, which is a great experience :).

The Hunter Valley wine area is a great idea, as has been suggested. If you are willing to take a slight detour inland, Canberra (our capital) is a lovely little "city" with plenty to see and do. It is only about 2.5 hours southwest of Sydney.

I think your best bet is to go off to see the Blue Mountains.
Absolutely breathtaking and as long as you keep off the betane track it's not too touristy.

IMHO, a wedding south is likely because of phuket
