Question regarding excursions when in Thailand?

I have booked a trip to Thailand staying in bangkok for 4 days and then Phuket for 8. Is it easy to book up day trips from local travel shops and hotels rather than pre-booking them from the UK?And do you have any suggestions on really good tours?

Book any tours when you are here. Booking online will be more expensive. You will find tour agents all over the city and at every hotel. Reason to book when your here is also the weather. If it looks like the weather is going to be bad you don't want to go on some cruise. Just goggle up tours in Thailand and see what you like. When you get here they will have books full of all the tours that they offered.

It depends on the tour company. Most of them prefer bookings in advance, some are happy if you walk in. And everything in between.

Just be nice to them: if you don't see a price difference for advance bookings, book in advance. Makes their planning a bit easier.

I always find that your better off booking in Thailand but sometimes its worth checking out a few places before you commit. ( Hotels can charge 500 Bht more than the local little travel shops )
For things to see and do check out tripadvisor.
You must go on the Multi Island day trips to Phi Phi, Maya, James Bond.
Monkey Island and others - scenery is stunning.
As for bangkok do the same but sometimes in fun not going on guided tours.
We got on the Local boats and went up river for 1 1/4 hr , stopped had lunch, then went back all for 100 Bht each.
Look up tripadvisor for reviews on what to see and do

Use one of the street tour/travel booths you'll see them everywhere they'll do everything including picking you up at your hotel and dropping you off after the excursion, pity you weren't going to Patong my g/f has one there. In Phuket there's some amazing excursions on offer depending on your personal taste, watch out for dodgy jet ski operators on the beaches.

book your tours locally, any number of hotels or tour shops will help.I can recommend an all in day to James Bond island/elephant safari/kayaking trip...dont be alarmed it isn't very energetic,if a little long.Everybody goes to JB island,tear-arsing around Phang Nga bay in a long-tailed boat, you'll be taken to visit the Sea Gypsies who live on a stilted settlement out in the bay for lunch and a look round the mangrove swamps to see the weirdest tree climbing fish in the world.Probably doesn't sound so exciting, but it's suprisingly good.Kayaking is interesting, guides do all the energetic stuff so all you do is lie back and relax as you go in and out of the sea caves.Elephant safari is on the way back to Phuket and is a must if you haven't been on an elephant or been massaged by a full grown one,if you're brave enough.A good evening event is a trip to Fantasea to see all the ladyboys in cabaret, not exactly my cup of tea but an extraordinary experience all the same.As I've said to you before make sure you go to Rawai/Prom Thep one afternoon and evening....Wat Chalong is worth a look and even Phuket town.Patong is an absolutely crazy place,a bit like Blackpool but on something.Phi Phi is beautiful and would be nice to see, especially if you can stay overnight,it's got a fantastic nighttime atmosphere.....Haggle on prices when you book, you will be overcharged at first asking
