Can I Spend UAE Dirhams in Bahrain and Oman?

I am going on holiday and will be travelling to United Arab Emirates and then will continue to Bahrain and Oman. The currencies are different but I was wondering because they were so close if shops in Bahrain and Oman accept UAE Dirham?

Thank you

No, The banks are supported by governments and no one will accept foreign currency.

It used to be a nightmare going on a Mediterranean cruise before the Euro kicked in having to buy Pesetas, Lira, Francs and Drachma at every port. Every time you exchanged enough to buy a coffee in port the ships charged £2. Then had the audacity to charge another £2 to exchange back your change.

This money changing is the biggest con there is and literally thousands of bureau de change points ceased to exist when the Euro came in.

I suggest that you change the least you can and buy what ever you can with what you have left and tip the poor cleaner with any coins you have left over.

This answer is about European money, in the Gulf it is different.

The quick answer is that you won't be able to really spend Dirhams in Oman and Bahrain, which both have their own currencies. It is likely, however, that you would find some shops willing to take UAE Dirhams.

However, since currency exchanges are all over the place in Oman, Bahrain and the UAE you should just exchange your money into the local currency (not too much though) and then you won't have any problems. Your hotel would be able to change more money for you if you do run out.

The website below has information on all three countries, their currency rates, and general travel tips as well.

In Oman they do take UAE money at some places. In UAE GCC Currencies are acceptable at places like Carrefour hypermarket. I am not sure about Bahrain , though Carrefour has branches in most gulf countries, I am not aware of one in Bahrain.

    see website
    http://www.carrefouruae.com/

they do have a Geant however

By the way ATM cards work across GCC so that may be a better option as you will get the cash in the currency where you are. You can also use credit cards or pre-paid Visa cash cards. Checks are not acceptable.

some shops might take a UAE dirham .. like in malls .. large retailers .. some restaurants .. not all .. groceries wont do this .. petrol stations .. and so ..

i suggest you exchange some cash .. to be on the safe side ..

noting that you're get more bahraini and omani money for less UAE dirham ..

    have a safe trip ..
