I was in a hotel in Co Cork recently and I used the free wireless internet?

they asked my for my name and number when giving me the access code to logon. They said it was the law and they were oblidged to do it.

Is this really the case as internet cafes or airports dont ask for contact details?

Using the internet overseas, I was asked for name and address. At airports, I didn't need to.

It might be the law, or simply their own policy. In libraries, you need to book to go online. You are asked for your membership number. If you are a visitor, not a member, you are asked for name and address details. In the hotel, they may prefer to keep iternet use for their guests and not simply anybody walking in off the street. In either case, they need to know you was using the computer at any given time, in case later there is need to know - such as police enquiries into child porn images, or anything else that might warrant attention.

In Dublin airport, you plug in your own laptop. You are hardly going to be asked your name and address to use your own item !!

its up to the person who runs the place. in hotels, most people are just passing through and dont come back so its to protect the hotel owners while internet cafes usually have the same customers over and also have cameras which can directly identify each person to a time and computer
