Best way to do a quick travel of Thailand?

I am going to Thailand in October. We fly into Phuket, and have a return flight ten days from then.
We are in two minds wether to book a hotel for the first night, and then take it from there, or book for the whole trip.
I am looking to travel around Thailand, or as much as possible in ten days anyways, any ideas on the best places to visit/stay?

We are trying to do it as cheap as, but I have been told no hostels.
A friend of mine travelled last year, and he said he was staying in amazing hotels for about £10 a night....

10 days isn't enough to see Thailand. You plan to travel cheap which means trains (which are on strike now) or bus. Both will take up one day in travel time where you can fly anywhere in Thailand in less then 2 hours. My recommendation would be go to Phuket for a few days then take a boat to Koh Phi Phi, then a boat to Krabi. Not sure where your departing Thailand from either Phuket or Bangkok?

I would book the first few nights in advance then take it from there.

Hi, ten days is not long if you want to travel Thailand cheap.
IMO train is the way to go but would not suit you with such a short trip.
Getting around you could fly to save time, Air Aisa is good and reasonable.
Many great places to visit, Hat Yai, Krabi, Hua Hin, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, the list goes on and on.
As for hotels, I am not sure how your friend defines "amazing", but for that price it would be cheaper end hotel, still comfortable though.
I only ever book my first night, then go from there.
    Have a good trip.

10 days is not enough to see Thailand.

In my humble opinion, you will have a great time in Phuket if you stay there for 10 days and explore the area, surroundings, and islands.

You probably will be jet lag too and may want to kick back for a couple of 3 days first.

Ten days isn't a long time! Starting in Phuket when you really want to see other places puts an additional limit on you. Phuket is way down almost at the bottom of Thailand. A lot of the stuff that makes Thailand unique is nearer the top and northeast.

If you are arriving late at night it is not a bad thing to have at least one night booked ahead of time. Yeah, you can find some places that are Ten pounds, what's that around 500 or 600 baht? Well that is no problem in Pattaya but in Phuket a little harder sometimes. Will you settle for rooms without air and fan cooling only? For 10 days maybe Bangkok, Chiang Mai and I guess you already have Phuket booked. Some travelers need more than 10 days just for Bangkok!

Here are some travel forums that can help you find cheap 500-600 baht hotels. Make sure you mention that price range. Thailand is a lot bigger than many tourists think. Just to get from Bangkok to Phuket will take all day by bus. Overland transportation from Bangkok to Chiang Mai will take almost all day too! With your short time and desire to see as much as you can you will probably have to pay for a flight or two between the cities.

Since this might be your 1st time to Thailand, book a cheap hotel for 1~2 night first. You might be tired especially if you reach there at night. For the same room type, hotel in Phuket is slightly more expensive than in Bangkok. There are plenty of guess house & differently class of hotel not only in Puket but also in the whole of Thailand. So looking for a guess house or hotel is not a problem.
500~600 Baht will give a room with fan and attached bathroom.
1000~1200 with aircon & attached bathroom.
2000aht a 2* average type of hotel room.
Single bed in Thailand means 1 queen size bed.
Double bed means 2 single bed.
You can look for other guess houses later on.
You can visit th PHI PHI island & KRABI as someone suggested.
You probably have 2~3 days left to go to Bangkok after these.
If travelling cheap take a overnight 1st class bus from Krabi to Bangkok.
Not really expensive and save time, sleeping all the way.
1st class or ' VIP ' what the call, is more comfortable to sleep.
Plan to fly back from Bangkok after your stay. Visting Bangkok is very facinating especially if this is you first time.

Hope you have a nice stay in Thailand.
