It is known as the ECT, or electronic throttle control. It became available in 2005; when the hemi became an option on the Grand Cherokee.

Ta!
Jeep Cherokee(XJ) was drive by wire starting at least with the 2.5VM(turbo diesel) in 1997 Model year.

The gasoline engine in the Jeep Cherokee(XJ) was not drive by wire ever.

The 2.5 and 2.8 VM (turbo diesels) were always drive by wire in the 2002-2007 KJ (Liberty/Cherokee).
