I agree with the other posters. However, they overlooked the Hotel Harrington. It's located in downtown DC and it's minutes away from all of the major attractions. It's a discount hotel but the quality is good.

You may want to consider staying in Alexandria or Springfield, Va. instead of downtown Washington, D.C. The accommodations will be more affordable and you can take the Metro (subway) into the city. Depending on when you are traveling, rooms in Springfield average about $75.00 a night. If you want to stay close to the Mall where most of the Smithsonian museums, Capital building, Washington monument, etc are located, expect to pay over $200 per night.

I also wouldn't consider staying at somewhere like Anacostia...bit scarey there...well, to be honest, central D.C.? anywhere except the mall is "a bit scarey".

If I were you, I would consider finding a hotel in Arlington, or even as far as Mclean. The Metro in the VA/DC/MD area is superb and quite cheap, you'll not have any problems there.

(plus, you should REALLY consider taking a trip to Great Falls National Park just outside DC, So pretty! :D)
