Getting around in Austin?

So i am new to town and to the USA, and don't know my way round, I have a job in a hotel in north austin, just off IH-35, and I am looking for somewhere to live, and was wondering would it be easier to find a place down town and get a bus to work every day or just live somewhere near work and get the bus to town when i needed to?

Opinions please from Austin residents!!

Thanx Adrieanne :) x

I would live near to work in order to walk or ride a bicycle.

The money you save not buying a car can be used for a cab on special occasions.
Most buses end up downtown easier that going across town.

For the longest time the people in control of the buses have purposely made them difficult to ride.

If you are going to try and use the bus to work you may want to do some research and try riding the bus.

Ask the folks at the bus stops near by for their comments and feedback to specific questions of where you want to go on a regular basis.

The student buses to and from UT and San Marcos are usually more timely and routinely dependable. The light rail "coming soon" may or may not work, or be an option.
good luck many people are also buying mopeds, but you have to be careful on them, and I would not go outside the neighborhood on them at present.

austin traffic is pretty bad.. i'd live near work and take a cab downtown if you're looking to go out, etc.. you're needing to go to work more often than downtown probably- so it might make more sense to live close to work and take a bus/cab downtown to go out. I live about 10 minutes from work (downtown) and it takes me about 45 minutes to get there every morning.

Living closer to the hotel is probably your best option, because Austin traffic is something you do NOT want to deal with on a day-to-day basis. I think every Austinite can agree on that! :]
