Good places to travel in Ireland?

Question

My sister and I are going to be visiting Ireland next month,just wondering some good places to go? Were staying with family in Kilkenny for a few days,and then at a hotel in Dublin for awhile. Should we rent a car,or is it easy to get around without? We've heard Cork is even better then Dublin,any truth to this? Were both in out early 20`s,what's a good place to get our Irish drink on? lol,were from NYC

You'll definitely have fun with the accents in Cork....it seems to change street by street....but a lovely place,and fine place for a bevvie too....that's a drink. You can get bevvied up in Cork very nicely thankyou,and have a great time doing it. Lovely people,and a place you'll have in your heart forever. Same with Killarney,but the town has gone touristy. The lakes are just as beautiful though,but a car won't get you through the whole trip if you do the proper circuit,all the lakes,the decent way....there's a lovely local solution for that one....an Irish mystery for now,you'll enjoy finding out when you get there. OH! it's not Killarney you're staying,it's Kilkenny,where I play chess in the castle every so often in a tournament....haha, marvelous.dear old Kilkenny Castle....nice town too...not short of a few watering holes,you'll enjoy it there. Have a look at Waterford,not far away,and see the famous Waterford Crystal factory,,,makes a nice tour round the works,and the water is lovely too,very scenic.,lovely old buildings,and a good view across the water with an ice cream and a nice big wooden boat shaped place to sit down with it..... ..did you get a hint of something before?......Killarney?......gorgeous...… give you the street lingo in NY terms .....you'll think of it when you see it.....Oh,Woooooooow!.............couple of hints here,and the link on it has lots of holiday suggestions of specially nice places....long one from me with Killarney,Galway, Waterford,etc .. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/ind… ... Thanks everyone who answered,id give everyone "best answer" if I could! Were really excited to visit,deff. renting a car,and getting away from the more touristy dublin. Still going to visit,but not make the entire trip of it. Thanks!!!!

Kilkenny is a great place, small, compact and lively. the public transport between that and Dublin is good, so you may not need to hire a car, (which can be expensive)

Cork is good fun, as a Dubliner I won't say its better than Dublin. But it is worth the trip, especially for the absolutely stunning country side on its door step, if you were to go to Cork then do hire a car, with a sat nav, those roundabouts are impossible,,,,the Corkoians will know what I mean.

I'd go to all 3, your probably most likely flying into Dublin, stay here for a few day, travel down to see your family in Kilkenny, and then finish off your holidays in Cork city and surrounding countryside. See if you can fly back home from Shannon, that would save you having to make a return journey to Dublin

Its a pretty small country, it takes max 5 hrs to get from Dublin to Cork, so its extremely viable to travel to all 3

Well, if you want to go to a REALLY good pub, I'd recommend Matt Molloy's pub in Westport, Co. Mayo..
Everyone loves it there..

You don't need to rent a car for Dublin, I would advise against it.

Dublin is okay for 3 days. Cork city is fun, but you'll have a great time trying to figure out the accent. Best way to Cork from Dublin is by train. You can get the bus to other places, but renting a car is easier, it's true, particularly if you want to get to more remote areas along the coast.

I suggest also visiting Waterford, only a day trip from Kilkenny, or a night out if you wish; Limerick - the last wild city in Ireland, Galway, and all the places in between.

Get yourself a copy of the DK Eyewitness Guide to Ireland, you won't regret spending the money.

You can drink in any pub, ask at your B&B where's good. Or follow the young people.

I moved to Ireland from Canada 5 months ago and have been travelling all over the country. Iv been to over 30 towns/cities. My top 10 favourite in order:

1. Galway ( " Ireland's Cultural Heart")
2. The Aran Islands - ( breath taking cliffs, Irish is the spoken laungage)
3. Dingle - The Dingle Peninsula ( gorgeous scenic view)
4. Country Wicklow - ( scenic drive through the Wicklow Mountains and the lakes of Glendalough)
5. County Clare (Cliffs of Moher and The Burren)
6. Dublin ( Great Night life/Great shopping)
7. Antrim Coast , Northern Ireland ( Giants Causeway)
8. Donegal ( Great surfing and gorgeous sandy beaches)
9. Cork ( Great night life, Accents are " one of a kind")
10. Enniscrone (Sandy beaches, boating, surfing, sand dunes)

Its really easy to drive around the country. From Galway ( west) to Dublin ( east) it only takes 3 hours. You could also take a bus ( save money on parking) Buses take longer because they stop at all the small towns but are generally cheap. By taking a bus you will miss many of the scenic drives i suggested so maybe you could bus to some places and drive to others.

yes cork is better !! go to cobh great little town on the edge of cork on the coast get a boat ride around the harbour on a nice day.

then you ve got fota island which is a zoo or animal park.

then go to blanery small town and go to the castle were your supposed to kiss the stone that gives you the gift of the gab ( meaning gift of talking) then settle down for a few pints

its A nice city to look around and relax in.

then go to blackpool where there is alot of shops old pubs and whatever.

I think that Dublin is better than Cork even if Cork is so pretty and there are alot of place to visit and activities to do! you should also visit Galway is pretty nice there. At Twenga they have pretty good fligh deals to go to Ireland take a look!

you cant really get around ireland without a car. public transport is no good compared to any other country. cork is definitely better than dublin. dublin is fine but cork has more of a good atmosphere where dublin is just a big city. places i think you should visit are... killarney...one of the nicest places around with lots to see and do. very irish aswel and lots of pubs. another gorgeous place would be doolin in county clare. you can visit the cliffs of moher and the scenery and atmosphere is great there. it really depends if you are looking for the scenery and atmosphere or shopping. if shopping is your thing dublin and limerick are good.

Loads of great answers alreay - but def get a car once you're out of Cork or Dublin. Get out west to Clifden or Westport, Doolin for the music, Ballyvaughan for the peace and quiet - and good drink too!! Don't forget to get up to Derry!

I would recommend cork over dublin but it just depends what ya like.
However id say rent a fecking car its easier and ya can go where the road takes you and ive 2 words for you ACHILL ISLAND,ya havent lived til youve seen it and gone on a session there,sat nights the best night to go. But i agree with the westport thing aswell anywhere in the west.
And if your from NY and you want all the same things that ya get in the city then stay in dublin but if you really want to expereince Ireland for the craic it truly is loose the dublin plan and head for the west,mayo, cork, galway and anywhere like sligo and donegal are great too.
