Best spots to visit in Hawaii?

going on a spring break trip with my friend next april to hawaii, and after being asked, i realised i had no proper idea of where exactly i want to go...

i would love the whole beachy touristy thing, but i (being from an island) know that some beaches locals avoid because they know its a tourist hangout, and i'd love to meet a few locals. oh and if theres a nice place to see a few hot surfers :P. overall i would like to know a nice area that i can visit, a hotel to stay, or any experiences you may have had there that you're willing to share with me.

thanks in advance for your advise -

The second poster got her coordinates mixed up for Oahu.

The East side is touristy (but with the most action with Waikiki and downtown) and quiet (with the best scenery), with the West side being barren and brown (with the exception of Miliani in Central Oahu and all the way up to the North Shore).

Oahu is your best bet. Lots of beaches. The North Shore has no tourists so head up there. The waves should already be dying down. It's a far drive from Honolulu, but it's well worth it.
