Transportation in lake district?

Hi, I'm planning to go to lake district on the end of May.

I'm thinking going to Derwent lake, Buttermere lake, and Grasmere lake after arriving Windermere at 8:00 am.

I found that there is rail line between windermere to keswick but i think i have to go to other 2 lakes by bus because i dont have a car.

what do you think there would be just a few bus services? Or is it highly unfeasible to visit 3 lakes whithin a day without the car?

I think i'll go back to london next day so i dont mind what time ill go back to hotel, but just I'm worring about transportation....

You're right, there aren't any trains between the different lakes in the lake district, so you'll need to use the bus. THere is probably a local bus service, but you might want to take a tour (there is a link below) or you will spend all day waiting at bus stops rather than seeing the lakes.

You could always see fewer lakes and go for a nice walk around them too, rather than trying to squeeze so much into one day. Have a nice time, the lake district is lovely.

There is no rail line at keswick at all
The only railway line is Carlisle Penrith-Kendal-Carnforth-Preston with a branch line from Windermere-Kendal.

    You could try busing it,
but your best bet is to rent a bike :)

You can get local bus information from Traveline Tel: 0871 200 2233

If you're telephoning from outside the Lake District they'll re-connect you to the Traveline for that area

I live there and you're dreaming. Take my advice and travel by car, or think of me end of May in tears.

    Hi,

It is possible to do the lake district by bus but it does need some planning !

On the trains the only railway line into the Lake District is a branch from the West coast main line (change at Lancaster) to Windermere. There is no rail line at Keswick. You can get back on the train at Penrith on the west coast main line which is to the east of Keswick on a bus route.

It is possible to do a few lakes in a day.

    Options could include:

train to windermere, bus over the kirkstone pass to Patterdale / boat trip on ullswater (see link below).
Note on this route you don't visit Lake windermere (its a couple of miles down the road from the station..)

    Option 2:

Train to windermere, bus to Keswick. Possible stop off at Ambleside or Grasmere. On this route you pass lake windermere, Rydal water, Grasmere, and Thirlmere reservoir on the way. There are nice walks around Grasmere lake.

    Option 3:

get straight to keswick either via Windermere or Penrith and then go to Buttermere via the Honister pass ( bus service 77 77A ). Butermere is a good place to stop, nice walk around Buttermere lake. This takes in Derwent water, Buttermere, Crummock water + the Honister pass (steep single track road with very steep hills...)

I prefer the North Lakes than the Windermere area as its less busy.

I have not checked if these are doable in a day..

If you click on the cumbria public transport map on the below web site, this will give you all the bus route numbers to look up on the stagecoach website:

    http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/roads-transpor…

Different map show scenic bus routes etc: (you have to select bus routes down the right hand corner)

Right, you can do it quite easily. You'll need to use buses operated by Stagecoach in Cumbria.

    http://www.stagecoachbus.com/northwest

I'd reccomend this for an rough idea.

Purchase a £9.75 EXPLORER TICKET from the driver of a 555 service, running from Windermere to Keswick. There's a bus at 08:18, or 09:13, and it takes roughly one hour.

Take the 10:20 77 to Buttermere from Keswick, arriving at 11:03

Depart on the subsequent 77 at 12:50 down to Seatoller, where you can change to a 78 service into Keswick, and Derwentwater. These often use open top double deck buses in the summer!

When your ready, get a 555 back as far as Grasmere, where you can spend soem time, before getting a frequent 555 or 599 back to Windermere! The 14:25 or 15:45 555 from Keswick might be a good bet.

So yes, it is possible! the last bus back from Grasmere isn't until 23:00 either!
