If your running a 32 bit system then the extra ram will not be recognised so is not worth putting it in,if you have 64 bit then it will use it!

No nor do you need it.

Most gaming Pc's have 2gb's of ram.

Think is more than enough if you are using windows Vista 32bit or XP.

Yes, adding an extra 1 GB of memory could make your laptop faster. However, I doubt you will be able to notice a huge difference in performance. I am assuming that you have a 32 bit edition of Windows, in which case it will not be able to use and recognize all 4 gigs of RAM. I believe that the most memory a 32 bit system can use is 3.5 GB however it may be 4 GB, but definitely no more than 4 GB. But you should be able to see a small performance increase with an extra .5 - 1 GB of memory. If you do decide to get the extra GB, I would go definitely go with the 2 & 2 of the PC6400.
Another thing to note if you do get more memory, you most likely will not ever use all 4 gigs of it. and most dual core processors do not have enough processing power to be able to run 4 gigs worth of programs. you would need a tri core or a quad core for that.
but seeing you memory configuration, i would recommend getting the 4 gigs. but like i said, get the 2 * 2 GB sticks. in doing this, you will not only gain more memory, but all of it will now be the same speed. Hope this helps.

PC2- 6400 runs at 800MHz while PC2- 5300 runs at 666MHz. I don't know where the guy came up with the 64mhz speed difference but he's wrong.

As far as you seeing a difference in performance with the faster ram, several variables need to be considered.

    1. does your laptop suppor 6400 ram? if no then your computer will automatically down clock the ram to make it work where it needs to, thus making the ram's faster speed unnessesary.

    2. If you plan on mixing and matchin ram, a 5300 stick with a 6400, the computer will go to the least common varieble and clock both at 666mhz, thus again making the upgrade unnessesary.

    3. Now if you have a laptop that will support this ram and you decide to completely replace all the old ram with the newer faster 6400, then I would say you still will not see a difference in the computer speed. The only place you would notice a difference would be in games. and only then by just a thin paper margin.

Now, if you install 2X2gb and you are currently running a 64bit os, then you will have no issues runnig 4Gb of ram, in fact you would see a significant performance increase. To check if you have a 64 bit system right click on my computer, not the shortcut, and select properties. towards the bottom there will be information about your version of vista or XP. if it says it is a 64-bit version you are golden if it says nothing about the bit version, you have the standard 32bit.

4Gb will not be recconized in 32bit versions that is why they put 3gb instead of 4 because anything more would be a waste. You can obtain a free copy of 64 bit vista if your computer came with a 32bit version of vista by going to microsoft's website and doing some hunting. they will ship an official instalation cd for about $10 or you can download the instalation files to a drive and then burn your own disk.

The process of loading a 64-bit system will delete everything that is on the drive so be sure to back up any important file you can't live without.

It is a pain, but it is the price we pay for better technology. If you want the 4Gb of ram, just be warned that you have some work ahead of you.

    Hope this helped

*All* the RAM you have is usable to you, up to a maximum of *around*
3.1GB (again, depending on your hardware). Anything more than that is
    not usable.

This 3.1GB or so limit is on 32-bit Windows. If you were running Linux, Mac, or 64-bit Windows, it would go away.

PC2-6400 is ...64MHz faster than PC2-5300? And regardless, your system does not use 3GBs of RAM, not even games use 3Gbs. adding one more is like adding another steel rope to tie down a piece of paper.

I usually prefer to go with matched RAM, but that's just me being OCD. I think its better that way but I've been told by others that it doesn't matter. The difference between pc5300 and pc6400 is the bus speed (mhz) of the RAM. You need to check your mobo and confirm the bus speed that the mobo can handle. If it's max is 800mhz, I wouldn't recommend buying higher than that since it will just default to the lower speed anyway.
More RAM will always make the comp faster.
