Firstly, I don't believe the article. There is a trend in national and local papers lately to publish "stories" like this which are 99% garbage. I attend football matches and have never encountered this problem, and everyone is happy to see people waving England's banner.

I do agree though, that the flag IS increasingly hijacked by far-right goups, trying to invoke a very sinister version of patriotism, which is fact the exact opposite of patriotic. Think of the BNP using the Union Flag as its logo. It is of course the people's flag, not the BNP's flag. The same goes for the St George flag. It is not the property of shaven headed nitwits.

Chris - how does Arsenal Football Club "go back to its own country?"

How can our National flag be a racist symbol, Men have died in two great wars to defend that flag. All good publicity for the BNP. They are starting to look better with each of these stories.

It is absolute bollocks that they confiscated it.

A few years ago the 'thought police' tried to ban the St George's flag in Romford market. The next week, practically every stall in the market had one.

Perhaps every Rovers supporter should take a flag to the next home match.

Emascalated Britain: Just on a factual point. The far right used to claim possession of the flag but increasingly over the last few years, ordinary Englishmen & women have claimed it back as our own.

No, of course it isn't and it's stupid of Arsenal to treat it as such.

There will be those out there rubbing their hands with glee, and using this as evidence that it is viewed as wrong to celebrate one's Englishness, so it was pleasing to see that some of the lies will be nailed, with the St George's Day celebrations in London.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-…

Boris says 'St George's Day has been ignored in London for far too long, but I'm truly pleased to announce some fantastic events to mark this occasion. We have much to be proud of in this great country. England has given so much to the world, politically, socially and artistically.' and I have to say I agree with him.

But won't it upset the namby-pamby lefties?

'I think it's great that the Mayor is grasping the nettle. Good luck to him. If you don't use the flag in a positive way then you leave it to be used by the far-Right and it will have negative connotations.' according to Billy Bragg!

If the rest of us don't wave our flags and celebrate our English heritage, we're in danger of leaving it to the racists and hate-merchants. That's when the St George's flag becomes a 'racist symbol' - when ordinary people abandon it to the far right. So let's take it back, starting on April 23rd. I never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but "Well done, Boris!"

Just blown out of all proportion, look at all the emotive reactions you're getting to your question. If you read a bit further, it seems Arsenal have banned ALL flags with a national symbol, except for internationals.

No the flag of St George is the true English flag and I'm proud to see it fly on buildings. We have St Georges flag ,the Welsh have theirs and so do the Scots. Put them all together and we have the awful Union Jack. Keep our country flag seperate and be proud of it like the Scots and Welsh are.
