Best way from Dublin airport to Rathmines Road?

I'm staying at Travelodge on Rathmines Road but have been told that a taxi will be really expensive. Are there any direct bus routes from the airport to Rathmines?

There isn't any direct bus from the airport to Rathmines. And yes, taxi would be rather pricey, especially if you're travelling on your own and no one to share the cost with. Expect a taxi ride to Rathmines to cost between €30-€35.

Travel with Dublin Bus is the cheapest option, but it'll also take the longest journey time. A couple of options:

1) Take 16A or 746 from the airport to O'Connell St (ticket €2.20). From there take 14 or 14A to Rathmines (ticket €1.60).

2) Take 746 from the airport to Trinity College (side gate/ Nassau St side) (ticket €2.20). From there take either 14, 14A, 15 or 15A to Rathmines (ticket €1.60).

The bus options above go through housing areas en route from the airport to the city center (O'Connell St or Trinity College). Alternatively, for a slightly faster service to get from the airport to the city center, you can consider the following options:

1) Airlink 747 to O'Connell St (€6.00 one way, cash fare), then switch to 14/14A (€1.60).

2) Air Coach to O'Connell St or Trinity College (€7.00 one way, €12.00 return), then switch accordingly (cf instruction re the normal Dublin Bus service, €1.60)

If you are thinking of taking Airlink 747 + 14 or 14A, or indeed even just the normal Dublin Bus services (the Air Coach is a private company service), consider getting one day rambler ticket - it's €6.00 and you can buy it at the CIE counter that's to the left of the exit door of the airport at the arrival hall (next to Tourist Information counter). This will give you unlimited one day travel on the Dublin Bus network including the Airlink, and you won't need to worry about having exact change for the bus.

Alternatively, there's 3-days rambler ticket pack being sold at €13.30 (therefore works out to about €4.43 per day) where you will have one ticket to use for the day of your arrival, one ticket to use for the day of your planned return to the airport, and another ticket for use any of the days you're in Dublin. They don't need to be used on consecutive days.

If you're staying longer and plan to use the buses more, there's also 5-days rambler smartcard being sold at €20.00 (therefore €4.00 per day cost). With the smartcard, instead of inserting your ticket into validator, you scan the card over appropriate machine reader in the bus.
