Im nearly 17 and my mum is buying me a car any ideas of whats a good first car?

It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota... First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car - for example here - autoinsurance.hotusa.org

yeah ford fiesta and Ka are both really popular. Because theyre generally cheap(er) and smaller cars.
Look for a 1.1 or 1.2 engine. No higher or your insurance will be huge.
My car which is my first car is the old nissan micra. its so good :D
Look for around S reg cars. They are old but not too old, so i think they are affordable.

Small (easier to park) used (you don't have to worry about those pesky door dings that you would hate if it were brand new) 4 door (easier for friends and packing more things in) v6 (stronger engine)

Great options would be a sunroof (convertibles will come later in life) tinted windows (not a must but it always makes a car look nicer and keeps the sun from damaging the interior....) good trunk size (shopping, traveling, etc. LOL)

A few cars that I had when I was younger which I loved and found incredibly reliable were a Mitsubishi Galant (that was a while back...1992 model) a Toyota Camry (1995 model) and a VW Jetta (loved it- 2005 model) Really VW's are great cars. The Jetta is nice, the little beetle is fun and has a LOT of room believe it or not (I had a 2002) So hopefully that gives you some direction.

Do your homework and make sure you check on the car's history. Dealers will usually do this for you for free. Low miles, no accidents, etc. Happy shopping!

Have a look at Ford Fiesta's, Ford Ka's, Renault Clio's, Nissan Micra's, Citoren C2, Peugeot 206 & 106, Vauxhall corsa, Fiat punto
There all small cars and tend to be a girls choice of car,
Look at 1.1L to 1.4L engines as any thing more will be high on insurance

An Toyota Corolla (1997-2000). They're very efficient, insurance would be cheaper, and if the worst comes to happen, parts are actually quite cheap... After all, that's what I want for my first car! Plus, they're Japanese, which means they're probably good value for money and they about 2-600 hundred pounds.

look around for some different types that you like and can afford, then have a look at insurances price compare sites, and which one comes you cheapest.
Some times some like a 4/5 door can be Cheap to insure than a sport 2 door, it may be a more cost to start with but could save money. (that is good if you are paying the insurances and not the cost to buy the car). This is if you are ok with something not sporty, which a lot of young people, new drivers do like a sporty car.

I always thing something like the 4 door ford focus is a good car.

Focus is a good drive
Civics and Micras are bloody good on the petrol
Smart cars are pushing it, but if you want to be practical and just get to places with cheap road tax, then it's something you could go for.

I recommend you to do a Pass Plus since it saves you a 1/3 of your insurance you have to pay (which may be more than £1000 depending on the car).

If you want me to choose just one, I would go for the Civic.

my first car was a ford focus i loved it. get something small, not too sporty and not too expensive that way insurance wont be too high and small is easier to park. plus ford is awesome. not too expensive because you will probably be parking in a parking lot with plenty of other first time drivers who may not be great at parking and leave you a little present. I am fifteen and I think you should go for a car with tailfins. They are cool and you will be noticed by everyone. Personally I would go with a 1960-61 Mercury Comet. They are small and the motors aren't very big (if they are original). They get about 25 miles to the gallon, too.

go for a ford ka, most young girls do, they are easy to drive cheap to tax insure,don,t use a lot of petrol cheap to service and repair, they have no cam belt to worry about. they only come in 1300cc but are the same to insure as a 1200cc

Thinking back to when my daughter had just passed her driving test at 17, she had a Ford Ka which was excellent on insurance costs.
