What does "Land Ho!" mean?

I think it is mostly used in the US, am I right? By pirates?

Please advice. Thanks.

It's short for "Land Ahoy" which means "Look out, land!"
It's a pretty ancient naval expression used in the British Navy for many years.
As most pirates were ex-navy British sailors it's become associated with pirates (courtesy of Hollywood!) :o(
