How much money roughly will I need backpacking around Mexico for 3 weeks?

Question

Please if anyone could give me a rough estimation in British Pounds of how much money I would need backpacking around Mexico (accommodation and spending money)

I am starting off in Mexico City and ending in Cancun, although I'd like to avoid the extreme touristy places. Obviously I know this will depend on whether I stay in posh hotels or hostels but just a rough guess to how much mixing the two.

I am going Jan/Feb.

Dont pay attention to that guy telling youthings to be scared.

I recomend to take about 5000 american dollars. That is to cover, food, hostels, transportations, meals, some drinks and souvenirs.
I think it's perfect for 15 days.

Just be carefull, dont go to lonely places, stay witha group of peopel, dont speak with stargers walking in the streets, dont go aways with unknown people and take care of yourself! I'm sure you will have fun cuss Mexico is such a beautiful place and people there are super friendly!

my visit at the beeggining of 2008. I spent 3800 american dollars, but I certaninly limited myself from some things like good meals, souvenrs, and long trips.

things are cheaper in mexico would u stay in hostels? i did and saved a fortune.
I made my breakfast at the hostel and a packed lunch for that day. I normally ate a meal out in the evening.
i think 3k sterling would be loads - I spent 700 euros in a wk but was very careful as budget was tight.
