What's the best way to clean mud off satin shoes?

I went to a wedding yesterday and it poured with rain! As it was in a marquee outside my satin shoes got ruined by the mud, and i wanted to know what's the best way to clean the mud off without damaging them?
Is hot water enough?

First, do not use hot water. Let the shoes dry completely. You might want to leave the shoes in a warm location, but not near direct heat under a radiator or on a heater. This may take at least 24 hours or more. Once the shoes are completely dry, place the shoes on top of several layers of newspapers and softly brush the dried mud off which should be crumbly, using a cloth and an old toothbrush if necessary. Take your time and brush/wipe off gingerly so that you do not tear the fabric. Assess the damage and if necessary, wipe off the dirt on the shoes with an old, slightly damp wash cloth that has a bit of dish detergent. Then let the shoes dry completely again. Unless the shoes are a light color or you had very bad incident, there is a good chance your shoes can be worn again. If not, if you invested a lot in the purchase of the shoes, take the cleaned shoes to a cobber/shoe repair shop and see if the shoes can be dyed a darker color. Don't be discouraged of one shoe repair man declines.

Prefers fabric shoes over leather ones; owns two pair of custom made fabric shoes that match an outfit. For 12 years, walked instead of riding the NY subway (that's how I was able to afford custom made shoes).

Well, to be honest, I hope you weren't too attached to them. Water will ruin satin about as fast as mud, which is one of the toughest stains.

But here goes. Allow the shoes to dry, then brush off as much of the mud as you can - use a toothbrush and a light, brushing motion.

After you've rinsed the toothbrush free of any mud, dip it in some water, and then rub it on a bar of Ivory soap, until it is nice a soapy. Then rub the soapy toothbrush on the shoes until the stain is gone. Rinse the entire shoe completely (getting just a portion of the shoe wet will leave a water mark), and allow to dry.

When you brush with the toothbrush, brush in the direction of the fabric. My fear is that you will abrade the fabric before you have removed the stain, thus making the whole situation worse, instead of better. Many a person has said goodbye to a mud-stained pair of satin shoes - or any other fabric, for that matter. Mud sucks.

No, you'll just get water marks and the mud will streak. There are lots of home remedies but none seem to work very well, The best way to do it is to let a good shoe repair place handle it.

Satin shoes are a pain in the *** for this very reason. Good luck!

I have a pair or cream satin shoes that got covered in mud last year at a wedding. I recently washed them in water and rubbed the mud off. It worked well!
