Have you stayed at or do you know the Sovereign hotel, Christchurch?

Hi,

I'm in the process of planning my next visit to New Zealand and I'm considering staying at the Sovereign hotel, Kilmore Street, Christchurch.

So far I have found no reviews of this hotel at all so was wondering if anyone has stayed there and has any particularly negative comments to suggest I shouldn't or maybe you have local knowledge of the hotel. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi there,
I live in Christchurch, and I would say thats a fairly decent choice. It is rated at one of the top hotels in the city. Around 50m to Town Hall, convention centre and the casino. Walking distance to famous Cathedral Square, city centre, Botanical Gardens, restaurants and cafes. 15 minutes to the Christchurch Airport and 10 minutes to the railway station.
Kilmore st is fairly quiet, it's fairly close to some main roads, but Christchurch isn't the busiest city.
I would just say be careful at night, we have the highest violence rating in NZ. I'v never seen any myself, but I dont live in the city. I would suggest not going into the city centre alone past 8pm. Dont let my comments scare you, theres not gangs or anything, just be wary of it.

Otherwise, I think this hotel should be fine, close to everything, looks clean, not the biggest place youv'e ever seen, but should give you a comfortable stay for the price.

I know the holiday inn is fairly nice, although it really would be noisy I think. Or the grand chancellor, I'v heard is nice, its opposite the sovereign.

If you want anymore help, you might like to try www.tripadvisor.com its fairly good if you need honest advice on accomadation.
Good Luck with your decision, and have a great holiday!

Thanks. I would have chosen you as best earlier but for some reason I couldn't. You get more points this way anyway.

I will take the plunge and book at the Sovereign.

Christchurch certainly didn't create the impression of being a violent place on my last visit, I thought it was very nice.

:o)
