I went on an excursion to see the northern lights while on a short city break to Reykjavik, Iceland.

Although we did see the northern lights it was a short and pretty feeble display which stresses the point that it is a natural occurance that does not perform on demand or reliabley. There are no guarantees.

If you are in Britain one of the most respected tour operators to Iceland is Discover the world. They also offer tours to other places from which it should be possible to see the lights.

Once there you can book a trip with Iceland Excursions for a trip to see the northern lights but it is weather dependant.

The best time to travel to see northern lights is the midwinter, and one of the best places to view them is Lapland. Do not try to find a big city to go to though, because the city lights will disturb the view very badly. Somewhere in Lapland in Finland is ideal to go to.
