Where is the best place to go on holiday in Thailand in Febraury?

My fiance and I looking to book a holiday to Thailand for 10 days in February & out of the following areas wanted to know where you think is best and why?

Bangkok
Cha-Am
Chiang-Mai
Chiang-Rai
Hua Hin
Koh Samui
Krabi
Pattaya
Phi Phi Island
Phuket

We don't want to just a lie on a beach all day so want somewhere where there is lots of culture lots of things to see and do, some cool nightlife etc and want to stay in a nice hotel.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ALSO can you reccommend any good websites to book this holliday on (that arent going to go bust - just had my holiday cancelled becasue of XL and dont want that happening again!). Where are the best websites to get good deals?

Koh Samui is fantastic. There are heaps of tours you can do around the island (book when you're there through your hotel) snorkelling, canoeing, deep sea fishing, temples, elephant riding etc etc. There's great shopping, beautiful beaches, and loads of restaurants. It's also only a short boat ride away from Koh Pan Yang.

I wouldn't stay in Bangkok for a whole 10 days - I stayed for 2 nights, and that was enough. Good experience, but very different to the rest of Thailand. As you have to fly into Bangkok though, you could stay a couple of days, and then go to an island from there.

You don't need to book a tour, it's easier and cheaper just to do it yourself. Book a flight to Bangkok, then when you get there you can book a flight at the airport to Koh Samui (they leave every half hour and cost about £40). You can also just rock up to a resort when you find somewhere you fancy and check in there. That way you can choose from more than a picture! Chaweng is lovely in Koh Samui. The Green Guest House is a lovely place to stay.

You have a lot of "beach" type destinations on your list but you really don't have a lot of time.

I would start in Bangkok for a couple nights and end up there for your final night. Bangkok is the capital city and it is worth a look. In Bangkok you can sign up for some local tours through travel agencies. Travel agencies act as tour brokers. Travel agencies will have a list of tours you can sign up for, tour company picks you up at your hotel and returns you there at the end of the trip. This will also give you a chance to get used to the heat and time changes.

Yes, there have been some demonstrations in Bangkok - but they have them pretty often! If you keep out of that small area you wouldn't know anything is going on. I flew into Bangkok, stayed a week in Thailand and flew out of BKK during this present demonstration, if it wasn't for the TV stations you would not know anything is going on.

Next I would go to Chiang Mai. In your case, since you really don't have a lot of days available, you ought to fly. If you fly to Chiang Mai keep in mind that there are two airports that serve Bangkok, Don Muang is also used for many local flights, it is on the other side of Bangkok from Suvarnabhumi. In Chiang Mai you can take tours to many places including Chiang Mai and the Golden Triangle area. Just like in Bangkok, travel agencies handle the booking of tours. Visit the Long Neck Villages and walk to the Night Market.

If you want a beach area and you want to save some money you can take a couple days in the Jomtien/Pattaya area. You will find cheaper hotels there than in Phuket and you don't have to fly there. Pattaya has the malls and nightlife but the beach is only good for sunbathing, walking and shopping. Jomtien has the better beach for beach type swimming. From Pattaya you can take the 20 baht ferry to Koh Larn for a day trip. Pattaya is only around 2 hours by road from Bangkok.

A final night in Bangkok will allow you to catch up on souvenir shopping, take in a dinner cruise and not have to worry about connecting flights breaking down or cancelled and you miss your ride home. Choose a hotel in Bangkok near the Skytrain to make it easier to get around town. Some hotels will store stuff for you until you return at the end of your trip. If you have some winter clothing, jackets, etc. you can ask the hotel to store them and when you return to Bangkok get them back. This way you wouldn't have to lug extra stuff you won't need with you all over warm Thailand. By the way, both Bangkok and Chiang Mai are warm enough to give you a tan or sunburn.

Chiang-Mai would be your best choice for all round enjoyment. It is very mixed culturally with many Hill Tribes close by and is the centre of the arts and crafts. I have been many times and always find something new. (The last time was a 3 day elephant jungle trip) It has everything the other places have. The least time spent in Bangkok the better and I strongly recommend you stay away from Pattaya.

Whatever destination you decide on, before you book, check on the dates for Chinese new year, then book your holiday at least one week before or one week after! Chinese year is VERY busy and hotels,boats,buses, restaurants etc all tend to get fully booked.

As to where to go, I'd recommend two places, fly to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai to get a taste of northern Thai culture, then fly down to Phuket to relax and take some trips around the islands.

And I would def recommend to look into Samui (road around the island near the ocean, you can hire a bike and go on a exploring tour makeing breaks and swimming in the lagoons.) and Phi-Phi Islands (Don and Le) they are so beautiful!!!!!

Hy Phi Phi Island without any doubt !!!!
Bangkok just alone, Cha Am nothing happens, Chiang Mai high pollution Chiang Rai to cold and far away from interesting, Hua Hin just to go ahead or as Thai the have a weekend after work, Koh Samui horrible after it become crowded, Krabi nice but to small to stay its a transfer city to somewhere around Pattaya is dirty as boring, Phuket is funny for singles but nothing better than Phi Phi Island and around, But if you go to Krabi have a look to Railey not far away. Oh take a look to the Reggae Band of Thailand named Job2do at You Tube you can see Railey and music about there and Phi Phi Island after the Szunami some years ago. I would leave going to Bangkok, for a while as the political situation is very unstable!

We are going to Bangkok and Phuket in 2009, but are awaiting info from the foreign office website.

In short it's dangerous at the moment!
