Do you agree with how the Rough Guide to England describes the English?

Question

Here you go all, heres your chance to have a pop at us English. The above guide describes the English as "overweight, sex-and-celebrity-obsessed TV addicts", it also says we claim to be patriotic and yet our Prime Minister is a Scot and our football team is managed by a foriegner and also says that we are "the most contradictory people imaginable".

So what do you think? Is this an acurate picture of the English? Feel free to let rip (if youre Welsh, Scottish, Cornish or Irish - in fact whatever "ish" you consider yourself to be)

Note: If youre American there is a difference between the English and being British. We are only talking about the English. Have fun!

True Clive H. The PM is not the prime minister of England. Though historically the majority of MPs in both houses are in fact English and the population of the UK is such that the English have the majority voice - which is kind of unfortunate for those countries currently trying to devolve

It's a fairly accurate description. (I am English)

The point about being patriotic is lost somewhat as a patriot is someone who loves and defends their own country - maybe we just love the fact that is run by a wierd scotsman and we can't put a half decent football side together.

Steve - we had no say in Gordon Brown being Prime Minister. In the UK we do not get to vote for the Prime Minister, only our local MPs. The leader of the party with the most MPs gets to be Prime Minister.

Being patriotic has nothing to do with the fact we are a multi cultural society and a better country for being so.It makes us unique and diverse.
As for being celeb obsessed,that's a minority of chavvy kid's and anyway we've got rid of them abroad.

Sigh; the Rough Guide, as in the Lonely PLanet, points out some of the negatives and a lot of the positives of England/Britain as they do any country.

But of couse; it the headline catching negatives that make the news not the more plentiful positive side of the book.

No country is perfect, nor should it expect to be.

So the Media interpreted generalisation is not accurate.

Honestly, as an non-English person living in England I find it absurd. Sure, you can find all sorts of people in any country to ridicule, but to state this is the norm is pathetic.

On a more serious note - If this is the silly information the Rough Guide presents it calls into question all the other information about countries you might want to visit, and would prompt me to seek a more reliable guide which tries to be accurate.
