Hi, I have literally just returned from NY!!! And I went in January as well. The weather can be hit and miss, in January we were wearing coats but not gloves and hats. However on our trip this weekend we had snow! And it was bitterly cold. I found a shop called Lane Adams or something like that especially for plus size women, it was opposite or quite near the Empire State building. If you go to Macys then it is very close and easy to find. Macys isn't far from Times Square at all and I found they had a great selection of clothes too, I even found some things that would fit my size 18 frame.

I visited China Town the first time I went (back in 2004) and my memories of it are a little hazy. I would recommend Soho, it's fantastic and full of really great little boutiques, also we found a shop selling the most amazingly cheap Ugg boots and apparently you can't find them for love or money over here.

We made the mistake of eating in a TGI Fridays on our first night as we were so tired, that was a BIG mistake. The service was terrible and so was the food. We found two places we absolutely loved right next door to each other, one was called JoJo and the other Alice's Tea Cup, they were both on E64th Street off either Lexington or 3rd. JoJo was expensive but probably one of the best meals I have ever had, the service was superb and the cost of most of the meal was the alcohol we consumed! Alice's Tea Cup is a really quaint little coffe shop - well Tea shop - that does the most amazing cup cakes. We had a fantastic breakfast there and also a lunch, the food was perfectly home cooked and really very good. You would be hard pressed to find somewhere as good quality back home.

Find the Earth Cam on Times Square just along from Toys R Us, call your friends back home and then wave to them, you look like an idiot but it's great fun! We had a laugh waving to my sisters kids.

We did spent a huge amount of time in Macys, they had loads of discounts on as well as the 11% you get for being a visitor, on some days they offer an additional 20% so keep your eyes peeled. I picked up a DKNY watch for less than $150 when it retails for £150 over here. We only had 3 days and they were all filled with shopping, but that is all we went for. If you are sightseeing as well you will really need to plan it to the smallest detal! But as you've already been you know this :-)

Have fun, I absolutely adore NY and am already planning my next trip.

Yes, it is going to be cold, but think YOU ARE IN NYC!!! for me, the best place in the states!!! restaurants.... you can go to oyster bar in the grand central station, a must, go to green papayas for the best hot dogs...cosi for the best wraps or sandwiches, pizza everywhere... for shopping, navigate in Internet and you will find for sure! and yes! go to china town, my advice bring cash, so it is better to make a deal, but go. GOOD LUCK in your trip!!!

I was raised in queens right after I was born and spent my entire childhood in NYC b/c of family or what not. If you want some nice affordable restaurants, it depends what you want to eat, if you want to do something touristy then you can check out Hard Rock Cafe or Planet Hollywood, you can check out MARS 2112 which is super cool if you're a kid at heart or have kids, not sure how old you are, or even the Jeckyll and Hyde restaurant which is really really cool.

but if you're looking for great places to eat, I would check out
    1. Carmine's on 200 W 44th St. Very good family style italian food.
    2. Victor's Cafe: 236 W 52nd St # 1: which I would HIGHLY recommend, very very good authentic cuban food. Amazing.

Or you if you want to check out China town which is also surrounded by Little India and Little Italy there many nice italian places in Little Italy.

China town isnt something you should pass up if you've never been there. It's a big tourist trap with fake purses and designer name jewerly. It's like stepping into China, it's not fancy or anything but that is history in NYC, the streets around those areas are historical and you should check them out.

I'm not too good on the plus size stores but here is one
If you wear over a size 12, you can forget about shopping at Prada and Gucci, but you needn’t despair of wearing fabulous designer clothes. Salon Z, the entire tenth floor of Saks Fifth Avenue, is devoted to women who wear sizes 14 to 24, and it's one of the most elegant collections, plus-size or not, in town. The labels are world-class -- you’ll find Gianfranco Ferre, Marina Rinaldi, Anne Klein, and Oscar de la Renta, just for starters.

    Saks Fifth Avenue
    Salon Z
    611 Fifth Avenue
    At 50th Street
    212-940-2279

    Have fun!!

Lucky you! January is a fantastic time to visit the Big Apple, even though it is cold. Here are my responses to your queries, in the same order you posed them:

    1. Affordable restaurants: There are two venues I highly recommend: Ninth Avenue between 42nd and 52nd Streets offers a bewildering array of ethnic cuisines, with everything from Italian to Ethiopian to Brazilian and Thai, and almost all of them are suitably priced for the budget-conscious. The other venue is the East Village, particularly Alphabet City (so-called because the streets are named Avenue A, Avenue B, etc; it's the part of lower Manhattan that juts out to the east on a map). This place is overflowing with young college-age people, and has inexpensive restaurants of all stripes virtually every ten feet.

    2. The best place to shop for plus-sized women is Saks Fifth Avenue, as they have an entire salon dedicated to these products. You might also wander around the Fashion District on Eighth Avenue from 31st to 41st Streets. It's not as glamorous nor as organized, but you're sure to find some real bargains.

    3. Definitely go to Chinatown. It's well worth it just to take in the exotic sights, sounds and smells. There are markets that sell bizarre-sounding products (like candied tobacco, for instance), and of course the knock-off vendors selling "Guccis," "Louis Vuitton" and the like. Buy a fake (but very real-looking) Rolex for $50 -- it makes a great gag gift!
While you're there, be sure to have lunch or dinner . . . Chinatown is one of the few places in New York where you can feed yourself on $5!

    Have a great trip!
