Hey guys, I'm considering moving to or investing in Kenya. What is the cost of living?

To gauge I'm interested in seeing what these cost in Kenya Shillings:

- A loaf of bread
- Movie Tickets
- Nice higher end nike sneakers
- A two night trip to Mombasa (hotels, food, etc)
- A current computer.
- A new Toyota Corolla
- An empty plot of land
- A 4 Bedroomed house with a large compound (Rent)
and
- A 4 Bedroomed house with a large compound (Buy)

Also if you have any comments on the standard of life outside of Nairobi, please fill me in.

Loaf of bread- 20 to 25 shillings

Movie tickets- 250 to 350 shillings

Good pair of shoes( name brand)- 1000 and higher, higher you go better they are

Two night trip to Mombasa- varies on how good you want it, I could probably get by with 5000 shillings, but you can also drop 50,000 shillings on that. So that depends on you

A new Toyota corolla- probably 500,000. Try to import yours instead of buying in Kenya, much, much cheaper.

Empty plot of land- again that depends, In the rich Nairobi Suburbs (Runda, Gigiri, Nyari)you will be looking at more than 1,500,000 for a half acre easily. If you're looking at further away from Nairobi, prices can be as low as 500,000 for a half acre.

A four bedroom house for rent - that depends on the place. In the rich suburbs, you can easily spend 70,000 but could probably get away with 30,000 if you settled for the safe, but not so posh places.

Same thing applies here. In Runda you could spend anywhere from around 20,000,000 to 40,000,000 for a house. But in Kilimani you could probably by a house from 10,000,000 to 20,000,000 if you settled for a safe, not so posh place.

If you like being in the hustle and bustle of things, but also want time to relax, then look for places in Runda, Kilimani, Gigiri, and Nyari.
If you really want to live cheap, look for places like, Tigoni, Banana, or anything around that area. These places are like an hour away from Nairobi. Standard of life? I don't really know how to answer that question, probably just as good as Nairobi, as everything is so close. So you have all the conveniences available to you if you want them. Especially if you have a car.
Keep in mind, all the places I have mentioned are the extreme of two ends. If you want something in the middle, their loads of places that are like that. And all the places I have mentioned are relatively safe.

Do not live around a safari park unless you don't mind living in a Kenyan-style boma or have a large amount of money to build your own house.

Nairobi or Mombasa are the best places to live for a foreigner, although you definitely have to be cautious of crime in Nairobi.

New Technology is hard to find and very very expensive. When I was there, people were trying to buy my ipod from me. I did see new corollas driving around, but I don't know what that person paid for it. A really nice and secure apartment is probably reasonable, but not as cheap as many would imagine.

It seemed to me that nice stuff was expensive and everything else was cheap over there.

The cost is living in Nairobi city

    Loaf of Bread - Kshs.27 - 35 (500g)
Movie Ticket - Kshs. 250 - 350 (depend on the threatre)
Nice high end nike sneaker - Kshs.6,000 and above
Tow night trip to Mombasa - Good hotel Kshs.8400
A current computer - Kshs. 45,000.00 and above depending on the make
    A new Toyota Corolla - From Kshs.600,000.00
An Empty plot of Land - 1/4 acre from Kshs.200,000 and over depending on the location
4 Bedroomed house with large compound - From Kshs.200,000.00 and above depending on the location
4 Bedroomed house with large compound buy - from 70 million and above depending on the location

Kitengela is developing really fast and with the expansion of the road, I would recommend you consider it as opposed to Nairobi City. There is traffic jam in the city. All in all it is a great place to live with a national park right in the city
