How much food cost in Chennai - Breafast, Lunch and Dinner, softdrinks, coffee, bottled water in Nov 07?

We are planning to spend 21 nights in Kerala and Tamil Nadu and want to budget our expenses for a family of 2 adults and 2 teenage children. Any guidance on Hotel prices, food and transport (Bus, Train, Auto & Taxi) will be appreciated.

I can say for chennai

Budget hotel/night - Rs- 1000 to 1500 (chk link)
Food+ water/person/day - Rs 200
Transport - Depends on how, where u commute,You can take state buses for inter city transport,Trains for inter state transport, also buses ply btw TN and kerala,

General advice: chk with locals for auto fares before boarding a auto for certain destination, for longer commute, you can call up prepaid taxis

below links will give details about buses, trains, hotels,

Have a nice trip

you will find it is dirt cheap to have a meal with drinks in Kerala...it wont even cost you £10 for all of you together. Lighthouse Beach has lovely restuarants which are cheap & the beach shacks produce some of the best food we have ever had...they dont look much - but do give them a try!

we used the Took Took vechicles...little 3 wheel things for transport...the drivers dont charge much. we found the taxi drivers very money grabbing there...and we had to haggle the price everytime. you'll love it there...it is beautiful.

p.s. please note..Kerala has the worst driving in the world...when you see it - you'll know what i mean...whoever gets to the roundabout first...seems to think they have the right of way..and they just keep going!! - hair raising!

The reccomended taxi charge is about 12 Rupees a mile and 8 for rickshaws, but expect to pay about double.
In Kerela, you could pay as little as a few pounds a night or am much as £100+, but for an OK hotel £20 a night should suffice depending on your needs. A train (2nd class non a/c sleeper) from Kerela to Chennai for example is about £5, a flight from Goa to Bombay/Mumbai about £25 (spicejet.com), a bottle of water is between 12 and 15 Rupees, but expect to pay more in tourist areas / beach shacks, hope that helps and have fun

It depends on where you are planning to eat, in a city and in a decent place you will pay about 500-700 Rs for a day of food. But if you are in a small town less then 400rs.

My simplest suggestion is take a tour operator assistance who are rich experience in conducting tours both in Tamilnadu and Kerala. It is better economical from their itenaries than you take your tour by your own, by getting Whatever the suggestion given here. The name of the compnay is Travel Times india, Chennai and thier website is www.railtourism.com. They are very nice tour itenaries with economical rates. Try once.
