What do u call the fence-like structures on the outside of the walls of a lot of big American houses?

Sorry, I hope I could make it clearer, but I don't know how else to describe them. They're cross-hatched, look kind of like fencing + people in films and TV shows often climb them when they've locked themselves out or something, and normally they collapse from the weight. They're meant to be decorative I guess, and normally lead to an upstairs window... any ideas?

trellises--you are supposed to grow climbing vines on them like jasmine or ivy or honeysuckle or climbing rose bushes, etc.
